Hi All frustrated Explorer users. Last summer I went to Kellyco and bought an explorer xs. Tried to learn it. I had only been detecting about 2 months with a Whites IDX Pro when I decided to move on up. That was a mistake. I read the explorer books, track this forum, but didn't understand what was happening with the explorer. Last week I bought a Sunray X-8 coil. The explorer is now easier to swing. The screen and sounds are no longer intimidating. I was trying to process too much information with the 10-1/2 inch coil. I live in Florida and the ground here is trashy. My point is this, in my opinion the way I hunt the 8 inch coil is much better. I have found lots of clad the last 2 days in smartfind. I am now satisfied with my explorer, I almost sold it, glad I didn't.

Many people including myself was frustrated with the explorer in their earlier days with working it all out reading a book with so many pages, not that im an expert using it but its not that hard after all , i cant really figure out why it took so long to master, maybe because its so overwhelming that a person tries to go too deep rather than figure out the basics

Giving up is not an option (at least for me). However, finding a handful of clad coins is not why I made the investment in an XS. I've done about the same thing as you, and yes, it's a start, but it's certainly not utilizing or exploring the full possibilities of the detector.
I'm finally beginning to read several deeper targets, but only a few have been coins, and nothing really neat or old yet. I suppose a 1942 Wheat might be considered old... but certainly not all that neat. I have a few gallon cans of them around, so it's a little hard to get excited about this one. Oh, well... I'm still working at it, and will continue to do so.

Jim,
I agree with you on the 8 inch Sunray coil, I think I learned more about the Explorer using this coil than I did with the original coil. I feel most of us hunt trashier areas and the larger coil sees too much and will confuse us, but the 8 inch you can seperate the targets better and still get great depth.
Good luck with it and with some more patience you will be digging some deep silver.
Rick

I've had the XS only a few months and I puchased it with an X-tra coil,71/4" minelab coil. I to was overwhelmed with the 10 1/2" coil cazillion audios at once. I went thru my yard with the old brand det. and found some coins. Then tried the 10 1/2 coil on XS and found more coins. Then ,thought I should have got them all but tried the 7 1/4" coil for the first time and found more coins, the same area! I haven't taken it off since. It took me a while before I started to find old coins but it had to do more with being at the right location and how I set the detector to hunt. This detector is very versitile once you learn when to change your settings for the right situation. I am a very happy XS owner and I hope you stick with it. HH Doug

I have both the 10.5" and the 7.25" coils and I find that the 7.25" works better for me when coin hunting. It's better in trashy areas and pinpointing is easier.

Hey, I stopped off at the old school on the way home yesterday, and hunted for a couple of hours (I've only had up to this date 6 hrs on the explorer xs), the school is a trash zone! And found my first ever 1/2 silver dollar (1968 D) in outstanding shape, plus about $7.00 on clad and a ring (which i am not sure what its made of). Anyway, everything just snapped into place with me and my lil xs. I mean, I've went over this place with a tesoro and a garrett gti-2500 (the same spot!) and didnt find anything but junk! Here's my settings: using the minelab 8" coil, in iron at mask -14, audio 1, gain at 7, sens at 18, vari at 10, fast recovery mode, limited threshold. I always hit the iron mask quick button once i found a good sound to double check.

You sound a bit more optimistic than the last time I read any of your posts, thats a good sign. If you stick with it we will eventually get to say "we told you so" and you will be glad because you will have probably just posted some nice find.
Don't let the wheats get you down, I swung for 90 minutes straight today and got one paltry wheat...plus a clad quarter/nickel/penny in one shallow hole. Then out of nowhere barber quarter and a seated dime...on my way to the car no less. I just posted pics over on the forum.

Unreal, NO!
As a result of a great deal of experimenting, time out in the field, help from Mark Knight (Minelab) and one really helpful individual (who doesn

Seriously, man, I don't think that anyone here posts coins that come to them easily.
For instance, some of the coins I have posted probably have a value of only slightly more than the face value. The only reason that I would bother is because I am proud/happy of having found them and hope that it inspires someone else to share something that they are proud of as well.
My pace for silver is 35-45 coins a year, which is meager compared to some of the others here. It takes me over two hours of detecting, on average, before a silver coin finally arrives. And I hunt in areas that have the potential to produce them almost exclusively - I do not look for newer clad.
It isn't a CAN YOU TOP THIS thing. It is more of a vindication of the detector used, the guy using it, and of this hobby in general. And frankly, some of us just enjoy looking at the coins - I personally love Barber era coins.
The reason this forum exists, in some part, is because this hobby has a great deal of doubt. You question your choice of detector. You question what coil to use. You wonder about the batteries or this or that. And finally, you question your own ability to operate the detector. These forums relieve a lot of doubt and, for me at least, a lot of the self-doubt.
