Don't discount older Tesoro's

They are well made, have audio variances not found on even top of the line units of today and to top it off Tesoro provides excellent service and still stocks parts for the oldies but goodies..Personally like the notch units myself as they love gold jewelry and give you the ability to get rid of a lot of trash and still get a lot of the gold rings...not to mention their right on the money pinpointing where most shallow targets can be had with a screwdriver...

Thanks to your help Dan, you got me started out right with the tips you PM"d about the Pantera that I purchased from BJ(OK). I have since learned more about the notch 'accept' feature that an operator can use if only looking for gold jewelery in a certain conductivity notch. The Pantera is great detector for any type of detecting whether it be for finding gold jewelery or silver coins and silver jewelery. The Tiger Shark has been my top gold producer for me because it is more site specific, and more gold jewelery can be found at popular swimming lake beaches. I am lucky to live fairly close to a small college town swimming lake that is a good producer of gold and silver jewelery.

I've been doing very well with several of the

I was going to ask the same question. Does one of the notch machines stand out above the others?

A Cibola with notch and CleanSweep would be a dream! Until that happens I say Golden uMax has best notch. Cortez is OK too but not adjustable like the Golden. I prefer the iron DISC of the uMax, but a higher freq HOT with a smooth notch would be the bees knees...

My favorites? - hard put to choose between the Silver Sabre

Golden Umax is the best. Here is the scoop. Golden Umax is the best Audio Coinshooter Tesoro makes. I have used one and it works great. I had no problems with depth. I picked up pennies at an old Church underneath the new Gravel Parking lot. Some people have criticized it because there was not enough separation in the tones. Junk came in at the lowest tone, Nickels hit the second tone, Zinc Pennies hit the third tone, and Old Pennies, dimes, and Quarters, hit the High tone. There is actually a fifth tone in the Over Load. Shallow Cans set off the Overload, so I no longer had to dig these OH YEAH. Quarters and other Coins laying on top would not set up the Over load. I will admit the second and third tone were close but with the little time I hunted with mine, I could call out my finds before the dig and drive my Son up the wall. I usually had the Coin dug before he could figure out his display. The Umax is so much faster and more fun, I would not consider a Visual ID unit.

Unfortunately I do not have my Golden Umax right now. Tesoro responded to the criticism about the tones. My Golden Umax is being modified right now to get a more broad separation in the tones. Tesoro is charging around $50 for this modification. Right now I can not tell you that I wasted my money or spent it wisely. I should get my machine back in three days and I will do a full unbiased review. I can tell you that my Detector worked great before I sent it back just like it was, so right now I do have reservations about my decision to send it.

I do know this Mod was the major criticism of the Golden Umax and it has now been dispelled. What would you rather have, a light blinking Quarter, or your Detector yelling Quarter in your ear? As the Detector is yelling at you, you are also looking right at the spot on the ground where you need to dig. None of that, find it, look at the display, figure out what you found, find it again, pin point it, then finally dig it. Just writing this sequence irritates me.

Updates to come.
