Don't buy a new detector right now.

I saw where the central Florida detector dealers are selling out of metal detectors. I'm sure it's the same in other areas of the country also. The reason is with the price of gold so high, all these johnny-come-latelys want to go out and make a big score. It ain't gonna happen ! When they find out there's a lot of work involved, a lot of new detectors will hit the secondary market via eBay or the forums. What's the matter with these people anyway? Was the thought of finding a ring or chain with gold ONLY at 6 or 8 hundred dollars an ounce not a big enough incentive for them ? Anyway, this get rich quick scheme is going to backfire for most of them. I'll be looking for another detector in about a month. Enough said.

Yeah, funny thing the way I see it. I do believe most of us got into detecting for the thrill of the hunt. I enjoy a day of detecting more than a day at work. I do it for multiple reasons too. (1) the exercise (2) getting outside (really like the outdoors) (3) was always into finding treasure (4) always into collecting stuff like coins and antiques) (5) like the beach and surf) (6) just like the sport of detecting in general. Don't get me wrong as I DO like finding the good stuff too, however, a day out detecting and finding nothing is still better than a day not hunting!!!

So, I guess if someone thinks (get rich quick) it's so easy to swing that coil and have gold and silver beeping all over the place, there will definitely be alot of unhappy new hunters with machines on Ebay!!!

You're right but I doubt they'll be selling on the forums. They probably don't even know about the forums. Their excitement will wear off after a couple of days of digging the surface trash while they swing the coil a foot or two off the beach and they get all sore and tired. The hobby may gain one or two out of them but most will fold. I can't even tell you what the price of gold or anything else was back when I started 30 years ago. It was just a fascination with being able to actually detect a metal object under the ground. Most, if not all, of us on the forums (I know, I haven't been around much) have paid our dues and we know the days of coming up empty and the thrill of scoring big. But even the dry runs were exciting because we always have expectations. I know that I am richer by far for just walking on the beach and the total relaxation that I get from it. After a day on the beach I seem to sleep better at night. The good finds are just icing on the cake. Those coming out now only have unrealistic expectations due to the value of gold. It's greed and greed won't keep them at it for long because greed expects quick results and most of them won't stay without quick results. Wonder how many will be wasting money on detectors that won't even work on the beach.

Hey Jerry, this forum started out this fine morning with 3 of these (gold fever) hunters posting, in a row! They don't even bother with an intro..
But, what does it matter, they come take info. and spend $$$$.
I started out in 78, and recall a hot spell similar to this I think in the early 80s. Next you'll see a run on DOG HOUSES !

Hi Ernie and all my Fellow TH'ers

You may be right on great deals coming on E-Bay and other auction sites. The problem is that many will save their detectors in a closet and be forgotten for the next ten years. When they do remember that they have a detector the batteries will have gone bad and destroyed their old detector.
Happy Hunting Everyone! Ernie contact me as I have a spot for us to search. Union Encampment and skirmish area. Between the Three Amigos we now have 400+ bullets, 50+ buttons, and 11 coins. And the best part of all is we are still finding goodies there; six 54 Sharps and one 44 pistol bullets yesterday.
