doing some testing of coils

did some hunting in my own yard over the last week..my yard has been hunted hard for years and still get a keeper once in a while. was using my mxt with 10x12 sef and pulled a 1850's 3 cent piece! that made my day. first ive ever dug.it was right at 8 to 9 in deep.it came in at 40 to 44 on the screen. so then i buy roberts mxt pro and sold my mxt on fleebay...my first 4 targets that i dug in my yard was a dog tag very old and deep, and 3 very deep buttons.first was a small button with eagle holding some arrows, next 2 were flat buttons. it started getting dark so i turned on back light, wow that is so nice to have. today i went back out with the pro but used my new d2 10in DD and found an old aluminum token with a star in the middle. and a very deep memorial cent.both had good signal and were well over 8in deep.only had about 30 min or so today to hunt. now ive always had really good luck with sef 10x12 coil. but i really wanted to try the d2. d2 is alot lighter.air tests are very close between the 2 with sef having a slight edge.with that being said the d2 found those items today as deep as ive found just about anything with the sef. d2 is alot easier to swing for any length of time. what does everyone else think of there whites d2 10in coils? i will get some pics of my goodies and post them this weekend.

I have a SEF 12 X15, 6 X 10 DD, 12" excellerator and the D2 for my MXT andI love them all for different uses. It took a little time to get use to the D2. I've taking my 12 X 15 into places that have been pounded even in trashy areas and still found relics.JMO

I also use the SEF 10X12 and the D2 on my V3i. I find the depth to be about the same and I give the edge to the SEF for the extra 2 inch coverage.

Hello,
I use my 10"DD a lot and I really like it. Don't have the 10" x 12" SEF but would like to try it. Anyone know what the 10" x 12" SEF weighs?
John

i used my digital fish weigher....sef with lower rod attatched 1lb 6oz the d2 10 in is 1lb 1oz with lower rod

i just weighed the sef with lower rod again but took off scuff cover...1lb 4oz...scuff cover only weighs 1oz but it was really wet and had alot of mud in it..lol i guess i didnt even realize it had a cover on it. i never use scuff covers.i will say that with older places with less trash the sef 10x12 was my favorite coil. im going to do some more testing with the d2 coil to see if it matches what the sef does..

Thanks for sharing that comparison basstrackerman. I was in the market awhile back for one of these two coils and went to Larry for advice. Your results are pretty much identical to what Larry told me to expect (as you see from his own reply above). I ended up going with the D2 and love this coil. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a 10x12 sef but with the coils being so close in performance I decided on the D2 as it's manufactured by Whites, it's a little lighter and the cost is substantially lower. Hope that's helpful in some way...

BTW- My first D2 went bad. Whites replaced it with a brand new coil, free of charge, even though I picked it up used and it wasn't under any warranty...Wites service is THAT good. I'd definitely keep that in mind for anyone trying to decide between these two coils.

absolutely! whites has very good service. thats one of the reasons i bought the d2 10 dd... i could swing this coil all day without a problem.. the sef i would take a break. so far so good with d2.. be out all day today with it.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure I want the SEF now. I'm sure I could get used to a extra ounces. HH John

I have the SEF 10x12 coil on my MXT and really like it. The weight is not an issue, Only a few ounces difference. I really like the extra coverage and how deep it goes. I found a quarter at 12". Besides, I had a youngster say the shape looked cool! lol

actually once i took off the scuff cover on the sef it felt great. i took both coils around my area today. sef did incredible! d2 not so well. d2 was very noisey and at times had to lower gain to 4 or 5 to quiet it down.that kinda defeats the purpose.went out to my brothers,in the country on 10 acres. i used sef first and found 5 targets with some depth, marked them and went over them with the whites d2. it found only 2 items!! was extremely noisey even out there.so i went and found 5 deeper items with the d2, marked them and went back over them with sef. it found them all very easy. hmmmmmmmm. sef coil runs very quiet and smooth.i dug all 10 targets,3 old wheat cents over 8in deep,a small buckle about a foot down, and the rest were odds and ends junk.so my thoughts.....the sef runs very quiet, smooth, very deep, will find very tiny items easy (staples, rivet heads,3 cent coins etc.) separates very well. d2 is extremely noisey, does go pretty deep, not as sensative to very small items, very light.but in my area maybe not best choice.im going to stick with my 2 favorites the 6x10 eclipse dd and 10x12 sef.

I'll second the basstrackerman on how quiet the coil is. That is probably one of things I like the most.
