Does the Land Star REALLY Discriminate?

Golden Silver

I've had my Land Star only a short while and the times I've used it I've defaulted to AUTO/NOTCH switching to ALL METALS to pinpoint. A couple of days ago I went to the park and decided to pickup dimes, quarters, and halves (and, of course, dollars but who finds 'em anyway). I wanted to discriminate up to the dime but I don't know if the Land Star can discriminate cents and still register on dimes. If it didn't, IOW, if I knocked out cents would I be knocking out dimes also? And if it did, I didn't care at that particular area I was in. I definitely wanted quarters and up.

So I set the detector on DISC and threw a cent on the ground and advanced the DISC/NOTCH control swinging the coil over the cent. Well, I was totally surprised when I advanced the DISC/NOTCH control all the to max and the detector was still sounding off on the cent. It shouldn't have. It shouldn't have made any noise unless there was a car under the ground near the surface!

When I had my Teknetics Mark I Ltd and I wanted to knock out cents and still pick up dimes, I advanced the DISC control until my meter's needle was right on cent and I could test it and it wouldn't sound off on the cent but would on the dime and higher.

I'm going to have to repeat what I did because I can't think of doing anything wrong. What do you think? Can you try it with your Land Star and see what happens? I'd love to hear your results.

Interesting test...I have never tried to DISC above ZINC pennies...Did not see a need to...I will have to try this test when my LandStar comes back home...Will post my results aftwards...

I'll be interested in your results but since you gotta wait a few weeks until you get yours back there's a possibility that I may no longer have mine 'cause I'm considering replacing it with an F5 except that, so far, there are no reviews on it. Not being able to discriminate won't stop me from using the Land Star but I'll be doing so with less than a full heart. It's unconsciounable of BH to design a detector with such a shortcoming.

A few minutes ago I decided to test my Land Star right outside my apartment door but the detector wouldn't work properly issuing just a low sound sporadically. So even though it's raining outside, it's fortunate that we have scaffolding covering the sidewalk so I was able to sit outside and try it again. No change. So now I gotta wait until it dries up so that I can go sit at a park bench and test the LS again. Why the LS didn't work properly I don't know. I hate problematic equipment even if it's not problematic in the field. I wasn't anywhere near any disturbing elements such as metal or EMI yet the LS didn't act stable.

Here's another LS owner's reply to my post on another forum: "I also have a landstar and with the disc all the way up it will not pick up the zinc pennies but it will still pick up the copper pennies, so mine is just like yours and i dont think anything is wrong with it just the way the landstars are."

So you see, the DISCRIMINATION is not what it should be.
