Does rusted steel = silver?

Today I got two fairly strong signals indicating a $0.50 or a $1 and two "wishy washy" signals that bounced between a quarter and $0.50 piece. All four proved to be iron, three nails and a 6" long piece of iron wire. Yes, I had the iron discriminated out but still I got the erroneous signals. I am using a BH Elite 2200.

What gives?

Yes, heavily rusted/corroded steel (iron) can sometimes register in the silver area. I too have had this experience. The corrosion changes the electrical conductivity of the item in the ground and fools the detector. Of course you still want to dig those signals because you never know......it could be a spill of various coins and/or jewelry items from a pocket or purse that is causing that bouncing signal.
