Does positive ground balance help detect the deeper coins?

When I first got the Golden, the ground balance seemed to be neutral, no sound when bobbing. It wasn't getting the 6" coins in my test garden. Then I tweaked the internal GB trimmer a little positive. Now it gets even the 7" dime that I have buried, and in a park a measured 8" penny. It seems with the slightly positive GB, the soil is pushing the detector toward giving a signal and the weak response from a deeper coin is getting some help from that positive push. I dunno, make any sense?

I always go for a positive GB with all my detectors. I do think it helps to hit deeper.

I agree. Every reference I've seen seems to favor a slightly positive gb. However, I've never tested to really check it out and my DeLeon (preset gb) seemed to do quite well with what was a fairly negative gb in all metal for the local soil. Of course it has another preset gb for the disc mode and that seemed to be fairly neutral. I think the biggest problem comes when way out of balance in highly mineralized locations or when trying to eck out the very deepest signals. My two bits.

I'd would experiment the signal strengh, on a naturally buried target, and not on a recently buried target. That way you know for sure, as recently buried targets are a bogus way to test. MTC's..............Hombre

My Opinion....
A correct GB should be best... Not positive or negative, but the threshold sound should remain smooth
and constant when bobbed up and down from maybe 10" to 1".... From the factory they will set the detectors (Pre set models)
slightly positive to work in most ground conditions so the machines will not go negative when used in most areas across the country...

I, like most people I suppose, set mine just a little positive at every new site so I don't have to keep checking and adjusting
if the ground happens to get a little worse just 50 ft away.... Normally when I set the GB just a "little positive" at a new site in my area,
I'm good for the day....

As far as depth... You should have a small window there that will work and not really effect your depth so to speak... In other words.....

On a scale of 1 to 20 and assuming that 10 is a perfect GB for a particular area.... if you are set at 9 slightly neg, 10 perfect or 11 slightly positive....
You are still in pretty good shape... It's when you get way negative or way positive that would concern me regarding depth etc.....

For peak performance you should always use a Ground Balance that is as close to "on-the-money" as possible IF you are searching in the All Metal mode. This way you'll be more responsive to subtle little changes, positive and negative, and Yes, you might get slightly better depth on some deeper targets ... IF hunting in the All Metal mode.

However, I've found that most Tesoro owners, as well as users of other brands, tend to search in the motion-based Discriminate mode. Then things start to change a bit and I've found that you will get the best depth of detection and overall performance if you have "Power Balanced" in the Discriminate mode. Some detectors, such as the White's Classic series, NEED to have a just very slightly positive GB in All Metal in order to function well. A "spot-on" GB in All Metal tends to be a bit too negative for the Disc. mode, especially in more moderate to highly mineralized soils.

With most Tesoro models I had/have you need to set the up with a slightly negative GB in the All Metal mode in order to be close to the best functional GB setting for the Discriminate mode. Thus, if you Power Balance in the Disc. mode, the result is a somewhat negative GB in All Metal. If the GB is set too positive, and ground mineralization might or might not have that much bearing on the Disc. mode performance, you can lose depth of detection and/or detection ability of larger and/or higher-conductive targets, such as silver quarters, silver halves and silver dollars.

Personally, I favor using any make or model that affords me the opportunity to manually adjust the ground balance in order to maintain an optimum setting. Usually, I adjust the GB to be "spot-on" in the All metal mode, but users of Tesoro models, know that this is not an easy task, especially in 'bad ground.' The GB adjustment, be it an internal trimmer or an external manual control, is all too often a bit 'touchy' and really more coarse than I would like to see. I wish the GB controls (external manual adjustments) had more 'fine-tuning" adjustment range than they do.

I just returned from vacation and had to explain manual GB to several people who had either an original Bandido or a Bandido II

In the mild ground here ground balance can be set so positive that quarters, halves and dollars won't be detected, and a Radio Shack 3300 I traded a friend could be set so positive it wouldn't detect dimes. I've found that detectors of the same make and model sometimes require different ground balance settings in all metal mode for the disc mode to work correctly. Some, like the Golden

Hey Guys

I love posts like this one..............I like to experiment with a signal, and play with the ground balance to see if I can get a better response with the detector. This technique works well with naturally buried targets, and not with something you just bury in the ground...............Hombre

Nice read! Introduced concepts I have not given a lot of consideration to. I do think I'll stick with the neutral GB as my Tesoro is not MY machine of choice when I really want deep. I love my TS but I don't think it's primary design was to create a Kick booty deep detector. The Vision, some of the Minelabs, the PIs, are a better choice for deep. Jim
