Does one detector go deeper than another?

Well I really can't say, but does it really matter all that much? I have a number of detectors but my favorites are my White's MXT and my Minelab Xterra 70. I have about all the coils avilable for the MXT and I have all the coils available for the XT-70 and have used them all at one time or another and weather I am using small coils or large coils, I have personally found that both are about equal in detecting deep targets. The deepest target I recall offhand I have dug with the MXT using a 6x10 coil was about 13 or 14 inches and that target was found to be 3 aluminum cans and another I dug using my XT70 with the 10.5 coil was about the same depth and it was a tennis shoe with aluminum eyelets. I like to hunt schools, parks, play grounds, lake and river shore lines, old homes and old homesteads etc, and the last thing I want to do is spend the day digging holes 13 or 14 inches deep. I am happy digging targets located with either detector in the 6 to 12 inch range and I find for me that the daily norm is 6 to 8 inches and once in awhile a little deeper depending on which coil I am using. Now if I was just a relic hunter I guess I would want to find those deeper targets, but I am not. I hear those that are unhappy with their detector saying they max out in depth at 7 inches. I am a firm believer that the more experience you have with your detector learning its adjustments, settings, sounds etc. the more you are going to be able to find those deeper targets, but it takes time and patience and it can't be learned overnight. I like to just to go metal detecting with family and friends and not having to worry about who's detector goes deeper. JMHO HH Dennis in Idaho

Hi Steelhead,

Of course some MD's are deeper than others...

But generally speaking, those in the same price range will perform as the others.
One may handle soil conditions a bit better or worse, or be optimized for this, or that.

Sure sounds like your MD's are performing quite well!
Deepest target I EVER dug was a dime at 10" in optimal soil.

But it seems, in the scheme of things, I'm a clad surface hunter, with aspirations of finding recent jewelry drops.

I very much enjoy the interesting antiquities and coins many fellows post, but I have little desire to dig deep holes, anywhere.

And that's NOT to say circumstances wouldn't bring a quick change of the program, if circumstances warranted.

The new White's PI that should be released soon sounds so interesting I just might get involved in deeper digging!

For fun surface hunting with family, I enjoyed the Little Yeller Feller at parks and playgrounds.

I've come to the conclusion assuming that a machine performs decently, depth alone is not the most important thing for me. Weight, ease of use, quick response and retune, discrimination and sensitivity to small items have as much or more importance than sheer depth. Besides, at my age, I don't want to dig holes halfway to china. LOL

Sounds like you have never been in the field with a buddy hunting with a Nautilus, from what I have seen nothing can touch it for depth.

I tell you that the number one thing I see is bad coil techneque. Very bad. Keeping your coil low and perfectly level will beat 90% of the hunters. Even on youtube I see what is suppose to be experienced hunters with terrible coil sweeps. I believe if your going to walk 100 feet you might as well search the 100 feet.
