Does Ground Balance matter in Discrimination mode for F4

Boston Metal

New member
With the F4 if I ground balance then go into discrimination mode, are my manual ground balance settings retained, or are factory presets always used in disc mode?

I wish I could be sure. But I have an f5 I never have a problem in disc. mode, just turn it on and go. On salt water beaches I will ground balance in all metal mode first then go to disc. mode It seems to work.

The preset ground balance is used, the all metal single tone mode settings has no effect with the disc all metal mode (4 tone mode).

I sent a note to First Texas support and recieved back this reply:

"I am glad you are enjoying your F4. after balancing the detector it will retain the manual setting and you can toggle between modes. only when you turn it off it will reset."

So from now on Ground Balance before you use Disc mode, I bet you get an extra inch or two of depth.

I always g.b. first thing,to start with,every time i turn it on.Good follow up Frank::clapping:

They need to put that in the manual !!

I also contacted Fisher when I purchased my F4 and received the same response. After ground balancing in Auto Tune the GB settings are retained in Disc mode. If you immediately use Disc mode when you power up without setting the GB the F4 defaults to factory preset GB.

I have found that I get more stability, better depth and more accurate ID when I GB in auto tune before switching to Disc. Also...I never disc out anything. It's easier to identify false signals if you can hear the Iron. Many targets will bounce from low to hi tone target and if you disc iron you'll believe it's a goodie when in fact it's junk.
