bootyhoundpa

Well-known member
over the upcoming holidays i may venture to the jersey shore to try my excal.. . my question is how cold must it get before beach sand freezes and becomes undiggable.... thanx dave

Went out to the beach today myself...Lake michigan that is, and the sand above the water line is frozen here, still I managed to chip out some nickles, tonight the big freeze begins, and I had to give it one more shot! Good Luck Booty Hound! fetch that booty boy, thats a good hound, fetch that booty!

Only liquids freeze. So the question is ...does the water around the sand freeze? Which leads me to the second point. Salt water or fresh? And then there is your latitude and of coarse which part of the world you are standing on. All kidding aside.....you should have a good time m/ding. HH

They're calling for 50-60 knot winds with 15-20ft waves on Lake Michigan tomorrow! :surprised: Add the forecasted daytime of highs of 15 degrees on Monday and I'd say you were just in time. :detecting:

You are right about what part of the world you are standing on....In michigan, theres a freeze on hiring, and budgets are frozen too...at absolute zero, everything freezes...or so I've heard from some poindexter in High school! Oh well, gotta try that snow hunting...the wife gets freaked out if I wander around in the living room with the detector finding nails in the floor joists..."hup! theres one! Hup, double signal! I've gotta run down into the basement and see if the carpenter missed the stud with the first shot...stomp your foot right here, honey so I can check my findings!"

Beach sand does freeze above the high tide line. I MD all year around (in the teens and high winds as well) the top may be loose but below it does freeze and the colder it gets the deeper the freezing accrues. I MD at the jersey sure for over 12 years now so I know this to be true, mostly, if you can get past the hard crust it will be ok. The sun will help to loosen things up, where it was frozen maybe 3 hours ago, you will be able to dig. Good luck HH

I can tell you for a fact is will freeze.....

Super Bowl Sunday last year you could bounce your digging tool off the beach.

Keep in mind the Temps.......If they are in the 20's and teens, It will freeze.

Sometime it will thaw during the day. The freeze is only a few inch's thick.......but tough to get thru.

i never saw any sand freeze in florida........
