Hello again, I have asked a couple of times in reference to the LOBO ST.I know they are primarily a prospecting machine but I would just like to know from anyones personal experience how do they fair in parks and such for coin, jewlery and relic hunting. Also how good do the other coils work on the LST like the 9x8 or 5.75 I would think the 17.8 frequency it runs on would hit good on gold jewelry even though it has other metals mixed in with it. I would like to hear from other LST users and how they run theirs. Thanks.

I can't help with direct experience as I don't have one. However, over the years I've read posts that give them good marks as a general purpose hunter even though their primary usage is prospecting. I've seen several used at planted coin hunts and they seemed to do as well as anyone.

I was going to reply to your previous post... But you asked for help from experienced lobo users. My experience with was just enough to try it out and see what it was like, then I hunted alongside the guy who owned it.

He owned the 5.75 but prefered to use the 5x10 for ground coverage. I have heard a few times that the Lobo with the 9x8 might be one of the deepest tesoros made - which implies to me that it must be good. Personally I wouldn't want to go without the 9x8 unless I was searching for gold or in some hot ground.

We hunted for relics as well as in the park, it worked great in both places. Actually he picked up a gold ring that I walked over with the Vaquero! For relics he was getting deep and tiny.

There is 2 downsides to this machine in my opinion. 1) when threshold is properly set was too quiet to operate in all-metal without headphones, I won't use headphones in open places.

2) The groundbalance does not transfer into the discriminate mode, disc mode has a preset GB.

From my short experience with the Lobo, I thought it was just great.

kneedet,

I used one prospecting & in planted hunts (Tokens for prizes-enhanced nugget & nugget only) for about 2 years. Used the 10" standard eliptical most of the time & had the 5.75 for trashy areas if needed (I have it now for my Vaquero, as I sold the Super LOBO ( I no longer can afford to prospect (permits, belonging to clubs, gas, wear and tear)).

I found in planted hunts in parks the foil would drive you crazy, being a gold machine it picks up very small metalic targets. At times you felt they were no-see-ums as they broke up as they were dug up. It is a great sensitive machine. Many relic sites & prospecting sites have high varing minerals & Super LOBO works well there.

Never used the 9" X 8" coil on it.

You get few responces about the LOBO because most prospectors have gone to PI machines as they go deeper. Most people have more than one detector in their arsonal as each has there strengths & weakness's.

The main thing is to learn your machine & what it is telling you. As a nubie dig it all ! It's not a magic wand.

The statement 90% operator & 10% machine is so very true.

Good Hunting . . . . . . HaRM.................... PS......Also check the Tesoro site for Field reports & MDer magazines reviews.

Hi Kneedet;
I used one for about 8 yrs. in gold hunting, ghost towns, trails, construction sites and one or two tot lots. You have to learn how it works. It's a little heavy for the long hall.
IT was a very good detector, but what we like a machine to do is not aways what it wants to do. I use a Tejon now. It's lite weight and I have a 5x10, 5.75, 8x9 stock coils.
Maybe You would be better with a Vequero, or Cibola. Both are 2.2 lb.
That's my 2 cents.

I did not own a Lobo, but I have used a Garrett Scorpion and Fisher Gold Bug which are similar and I will tell you that in trashy sites those detectors are a nightmare to use. Junk targets sound great.

thanks fellas for the info. If anyone else has any other, sure would like to hear.

kneedet,

You can use the "Search" option at the top of the page, in messages:type in Lobo ST.........select exact phrase, then go down to bottom and select messages as threads and select all dates this will bring up all info in the archives. I got 16 pages.........Hope this helps

The afore mentioned advice to "dig it all" (at least for now) is solid gold. The detector is your "text book" and the hunting sites are your "university" so study as best as you can. Time will help you to fine tune and reject or select for the most part, many of the signals you encounter. However, the best advice when in doubt is "dig em all". It's the only foolproof ID system there is.
