does anyone use a pinpointer

On the Sovereigns I find this is a must for me as I can find my targets quicker and get on to the next one. On the shallow one I just get a idea where the target is and switch on the pinpointer and find it without digging a plug. On the deep ones sometimes when you dig a plug you will not get a signal again, but with the S-1 I can go into the hole and find it fast and easy. This also hold true as many coins on edge the pinpointing can be off 3 or 4 inches from where you think it is, with the Pinpointer you will see that the signal come from the side of the hole. Like I say it make recovery faster and on to the next target and don't have to worry about leaving a good find in the ground because you cant find it.

I use one even when hunting the beach with a sand scoop. If I am in the water I dont use it, but on the wet sand it is quicker to dig, dump the sand and find the target with my pointer than it is to walk down to the water with a full scoop and wait for a wave to wash the scoop full of sand in.
Also in the dry sand if a small target like and earring drops through the mesh in my scoop I can find it with my pointer.

Thw S-1 search probe works great with my Sov.GT fast and always on target . Jim

I've owned the Sunray inline probes on my Explorers but I prefer the hand held Garrett ProPointer. It's the best hand held pinpointer on the market. What I don't like about the Sunray inline probes is more wires, mess, and weight on the shaft. And also that it took two hands for me to unclip it, use it, and snap it back onto the shaft...Which ended up getting the shaft rather muddy. Another big minus for me is you can't use that probe with other detectors, or say set your machine down and go over and help a friend find his target which I can do with the ProPointer.

Whichever pinpointer you decide to buy...YES, in my opinion it's a MUST HAVE for hunting. If my ProPointer battery dies I pack up and go home if I don't have an extra battery for it. Can't live without it now. Luckily it's battery life is very good. I get close to a year out of it. I remember the good old days when we'd take the plug or dirt in our hands and wave it over the top of the coil looking for the target. That might have worked well on our Whites and other machines where your max depth on a coin was about 7 to maybe 8", but when you are using a Minelab that can go much deeper and isn't quite as accurate as a Whites in PPing a pinpointer is a must have IMHO.

Last Friday, I had 2 hours to hunt when i got my first target I realized I had forgotten my Garrett Pro pointer. The first target
I recovered no problem. the second took a little longer on the third I flipped the plug back and gave up. I went back home and got the
propointer.
Yes,a pinpointer is a must and can help you not scratch coins with your digger.

Very true...And some of those coins and other targets I just don't know how I would have found without my ProPointer. Coins on edge that ended up being buried still further into the side of the hole which would probably have me digging deeper thinking I still haven't reached the coin, or gave up on it because I thought it must be a large deep target when in fact it's just hiding in the side of the hole...Because coins on edge often are really far off to the side of where your pinpoint with the machine said. Or then there's the tiny little stuff that hides in the dirt and I would never have been able to find unless it was for the ProPointer. Or like just yesterday where a massive root was in the way so the ProPointer was able to tell us just where to dig around the side of that root and pluck out the silver rosie.

Can't live without the ProPointer. I almost think I would give up detecting without it, or at least just water hunt where I'm using a long handled sand scoop and don't really need a pinpointer for that. I do still use the ProPointer when beach hunting in dry sand, though. I like to dump the sand out of the basket, spread it out with my foot, and then use the ProPointer to find the target. My dry beach sand doesn't easily shake out of the scoop where I could just shake the sand out and have the target remain in the scoop. In the water it's another story though, as you can just use the motion in the water to force the sand to wash out and leave the target behind in the scoop.

The ProPointer is also great for popping shallow targets it a screwdriver such as in sports fields where you might get kicked out if somebody saw you digging with a digger. I just move the ProPointer around until I hit the target and then insert the screwdriver and pop it out. It's deadly and fast.

The ProPointer is so far ahead of other hand held pinpointers of the past that it's been a big seller for Garrett, and that even guys who think Garrett machines are terrible still love the ProPointer. That's probably why Minelab is coming out with their own pinpointer this spring. I just wonder if it will have any better depth than the ProPointer. If it doesn't then they better price it lower because everybody will still buy the ProPointer. Besides, I super tune my ProPointer when it can't hear a target and have all the depth I need that way. Un-supertuned it still has very good depth, though.

For a while I tried struggling with one of those Centech cheap pinpointers from Harbor Tool & Freight. It was marginaly better than not having one but honestly it made me more frustrated than anything else. Constantly having to adjust the sensivity, falsing randomly, and still not getting very good depth at all to where it was almost pointless to use one.

The Sun Ray S-1 is my favorite as it is a disc pin pointer and has much better depth than the Garrett Pro pin pointer, but for a hand held Pin pointer I feel the Garret is the best out there and reasonable too. Another pin pointer I have a love, but cost much more and that is the Uni Probe that is built into the headphones which I use for any new detector I am using that I cant get a Sun Ray for or don't know if i will keep the detector as it will work on them all plus the Headphones are excellent quality. The Uni Probe is a pulse pin pointer and it is small diameter and the depth is very very deep.

Once you start using a pinpointer you will be spoiled.Pinpointers makes recovering targets easy actually fun instead of work.I'm at the point if I get to a location without my pinpointer the hunt is cancelled.I agree with Rick the S-1 and the Sovereign is the best combo,my second choice is the Garrett Pro Pinpointer, very well made, great performance and ergonomics. If you want to try a cheap pinpointer or ever forget yours Harbor Freight sales them for $16.95.Even a cheap pinpointer is light years ahead of not having one.Kind of like why would you use a hammer instead of a rock.HH Ron

Like many other things in life, once you use a pinpointer you will wonder how you managed without one.

What he says, save typing and I agree with his post!

 Luckily I can type really fast so yes...I do tend to talk more than I probably should in the forums. Funny thing is I'm not like that in real life. Prefer to keep my mouth shut and avoid conversation with most people.

I use the Garrett Pro pointer on land only and love it.

I know I got one when I got my sovereign and it has saved me quite a bit of time....I never really needed one with my other machines but without a depth meter on the sovereign I think the pin pointer has helped me

Yes, the Sovereign is just too deep and not quite as easy to do a real sharp PP with as compared to other machines I've owned, so for sure the ProPointer is a life saver, but I'd refuse to hunt without it even if I was using a machine with a concentric coil and the ability to detune to really laser in on targets like my Whites were.

YES! They are worth it. Get one! Decide what you like and can afford and get one. Bottom line. No regrets.. HH. Matt
