What all the major defects the XS has? I have to send my unit in to be fixed. I need them to look at the headphone jack, I have broke the bottom stem twice. I have heard alot of people talk about the cracking in the upper unit but that hasn't happened yet. My question is are there certain parts that they are replacing because they were detective. If that is the case can you tell me which ones so when I send my unit back I can get it all fixed at one time. I had heard that they had a better bottom rod and that they replace where it is cracked in the unit. Thanks, Diane

diane i sent mine in to replace the broken headphone jack they also replaced the control housing where the crack was on the upper rod all is well get yourself the exp.xs stand made by sunray it cost about 20.00 and the headphone jack problem will be solved also you can then use quarter inch h.p. you wont be sorry:::: also the xs doesnt have any more major defects then other units they can be solved realy easily by minelab and they are more then happy to make you content speak to mark at minelab the guy is tops>>> i have a garrett gti1500 that i got in march of 2001 the unit has been sent back 4 times for repairs finally garrett replaced it with a new one and this is not my PRIMARY UNIT the xs is hope this helps robert

Robert, I have the explorer stand from Sunray, I have used it since I got my explorer. I have an e-mail I sent to Sunray to see if the problem might be in their 1/4 inch jack adapter. My machine will cut off and I can't hear anything then when I put pressure on the connector to the 1/4 inch jack it will work again. So I might be wrong about the minelab jack.I wonder if anybody else out there has had a problem with the sunray adapter? I am going to give Mark or Sam a call before I do anything. Thanks for your help. HH Diane

do you have your original phones to try in the 1/8th jack? it might just be loose in the stand

After just one summer at the beach, the 1/4" jack on the Sunray adapter is starting to rust out. I'm wondering just how long it will last.

Should be fairly easy to replace yourself, radio shack has them for a couple bucks.. alot easier than trying to replace the 1/8th inch jack on the explorer

Because I tried two sets of phones and could get no audio. Ended up being both phones. Anyway, the Sunray jack is a sealed fancy thing, probably to keep dirt out. Sure the shack jacks would work, but might let some crap in. They probably have the same type if you ask though.
The bottom is just siliconed, you can just take a knife and work it between the bottom and the sides and cut it out. I re-siliconed it and you can hardly tell I did it. You probably wouldn't notice if I didn't tell you. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D">
Other than that, I have never heard of a stand going bad. I only thought mine might have because I dropped it pretty hard one time, but I stretched my cord in the process.

....about the rust on the Sunray adapter stand. Upon further inspection, it's the mounting washer behind the mounting nut that is completely rusted. The threaded portion of the jack (inside and out) and inside the sealed unit, as best as I can see with a miniature Maglite, I don't see any rust, but there is a heavy buildup of white corrosion. I don't know whether this is from the salt atmosphere or something else. I actually had to repolish the pin on my adapter plug that I use with my stock 1/8" headphones, but as far as I can tell, the Sunray Adapter unit is working fine. Changing that mounting washer won't be a problem unless they glued it to the housing. Just have to hold onto the jack to make sure it doesn't fall into the housing. When I replace it, I'll use a stainless steel washer.
