I found the gold colored part of a watch that held the crystal in place and apparently snapped in place to the rest of the watch. It was also indented to allow the watch stem pass thru. The piece was about 4" deep and had no corrosion what-so-ever and was a bright gold color. On what would have been the inside of the piece it was engraved in very small "roman numerals" 8 3 8. What I want to know could this indicate the purity of the piece or doesn't it really indicate anything at all and that the piece might not even be gold? Thanks for any input...

a lot of watches have model numbers ..You would need the makers name and then you can look up the 838 if it is the model number of that maker. Some were made of Gold. Many Brass or other items that are colored like Gold. Test it to be sure.. I'm not positive because you say Roman Numerals. Most I have seen didn't use Roman numerals..Hope you are able to do some research.. Isn't it fun what detecting leads to.
