Does anyone know why Whites changed from the old style coil to the new style?

Just wondering if anyone knows why Whites went from the older solid feeling flat 950 to the more hollow feeling thicker 3D 950 coils. Is there any difference in performance or depth? I am looking for a preowned MXT and am finding them with both styles of coils and I kind of prefer the older one due to its tough solid feel if you hit it on rocks, etc. Thoughts?

My understanding is they can now open up the coil for repairs..On the prior style they had to be repalced when bad. Saves us and Whites on expense.

I have the old style as I bought my MXT 5 years ago. My understanding is the new style is repairable, the old style is not. I have seen allot of posts about the new 9.5 not being very good for some reason. I am not sure if people need to justify buying more coils or if there really is a problem. I have the 4X6, 6X9, 9.5 and the Super 12. I have found my deepest targets with the 9.5 although the verdict for me on the Super 12 is still out because I haven't had it that long. I need and use them all under certain conditions but as far as I am concerned the 9.5 is a great coil, at least the old style is.

Hmmm, repairable. I think I am going to look for an old style 950 coil setup. It has been time proven and I have never heard of anyone really having any trouble out of them. Now the question is: has there been software improvement in recent years on the MXT?.....

Tin and Elton are righ,t it was so so they can be repaired. The one thing about the older open coil was that it did seem to suffer from going off tune. I've had a few cases where its happened. On the other hand no trouble with my other Whites coils, the oldest "solid" type coil must be over 25 years old and is still going strong.

How would you know if the coil you have is going off tune? Back in the day when I sent my XLT in to Sweet Home a couple of times for battery issues, it was found that the coil was off tune.(2 different coils a year apart) It didnt act any different when using it that i knew of. Depth, etc. seemed all the same before and after the coil replacement. The nice person at Whites told me that there was a capacitor in the coil that went out of spec quite regularly and they needed to replace the coil. The coil was replaced twice at a reduced price each time. From what I understand now, Whites has a much broader range of what "spec" is when checking the coil. I just got my machine back a couple of weeks ago and the now 15 old coil checked out fine.

 I think that new style 950 coil is just plain ugly:thumbdown: ...Sorry but that's just my opinion. Also it is just as cost effective to get a used replacement coil. If they would just quit switching styles so much then the coils would be better available. I am anxiously awaiting the time when Whites comes out with something new! Hopefully they will bring back one of the older popular models and re- do it to comply with lead free requirements. Bring back the 6.9khz:crylol:
