Does anyone has problems / Issues with their AT Pro?

I've had mine nime 4-5 months and right out of the box, I've had some episodes where I lose the volume or very low volume, and then other times it's normal. No, it's not the proportional audio either. I have it narrowed down ( I think) to the connection for the coil. It also goes haywire and signals all over the place sometimes also. If I loosen the connection sometimes it stops. I've called Garrett twice, and they told me to do a hard reset, which never works. It does this with my big or small DD coil,....I've just refused to send it back until I'm done hunting this winter, but it is getting to te point it's driving me nuts now. I love this detector and I've found some good stuff and deep ...but I'm gonna have to send it in for repairs I believe. I'm not mad I know things happen, and I have 100 faith in Garrett they will make it right,,,,,I just can't put it down to send it in ... lol

I'v had no problems with mine in and out of the water. If youve used it in water unscrew coil connecter and check pins on both connecters and see if there is water/heavy moisture in the connector on the box. I use silicone grease on the O rings to insure easy install & change of coils. Check headphone connecters also, including O rings. Hope u find the cause. Let us know what the cause is.

I haven't had it in water yet Ralph.....Like I said, it started this right out of the box, but I was so impressed when it did work normal...I just kept dealing with it when it acts up..but it's getting worse now.

Ive had the same thing happen a couple of times. At first I thought it was the headphones, so I hooked up another set and it was the same. When it did happen the volume was not only low (had the sunray pros on full vol)
but also very raspy and hard to hear a clear signal, I was wondering if it was something to do with the adapter at the times.

Had unit turn itself off during hunt:

It turned out that I had a faulty battery holder. I cleaned the contact points with a pencil eraser and also the contact points on my rechargeable batteries. That solved the problem.

I have had the following things happen:

Machine going unstable.......it turned out that there was an underground power line. If I turned down my sensitivity, it seemed to resolve the problem.

I had My AT Gold quit on me a few months ago while in the water. Here are the signs and symptoms:

-icons still on & visible
-absolutely no audio when swinging the coil over any metal target
-volume slowly increasing when pinpoint button pushed and held.
-able to turn unit off/on
-holding on/off button to re-tune unit ineffective
-no water visible in unit
-unit was working again the following day as it should

After replacing batteries, physically checking the coil for damage, I removed the connector for the coil. Guess what? A few drops of water got in there and and caused the malfunction. I carefully dried it with a kleenex, then removed some calcium (?) deposits from the inside with a wooden toothpick and cleaned it out again. I removed the "O" ring, checked it's integrity, cleaned out the area where it sits and cleaned the "O" ring. I re-applied some silicone lubricant to the "O" ring and the groove where it sits, plus the thread before tightening. I re-assembled the unit, water tested it for 4 hours and it works fine.

If your unit quits, please try some problem solving before you send it in. If you are not sure, ask on this forum and someone might have the answer for you. If you can fix the problem, you avoid the dreaded sending it in for repair.

No power lines. no moisture in the connections, it does it without the head phones..and from the first time I turned it on after putting it together it has done this..I know has it's suppose to sound because a buddy I hunt with had one also, his was fine and never any problems, except that his got stolen from his truck. I have checked and tried everything..except taking it apart to see if I could pin point the problem. It seems to be the connector on the machine causing it...So, I guess I have to make another call to Garrett to send it in....Im gonna be lost without it.

Maybe send it in at the end of your season. We just got snow, although that doesn't stop me from hunting. At least you bought it from a reputable company who will surely look after you.....

Good luck!

Well, that is or was my plan..to just deal with it til season is over, and it's getting close. But, it is getting worse. Yes I bought it from a good supplier, but I'll have to send it to Garrett for repairs probably.

Good news is Garrett turns stuff around pretty fast. In the 1 1/2 years I've had my AT-Pro I had to send it in once. Ten days door to door. Can't complain about that. They fixed a minor problem with the auto ground balance and upgraded a board just because it came in. I figure it's not worth the hassle if it's under warranty. I only lose one weekend!

Hey guys mine has the same problem,,as the day gets warmer the volume gets weaker and its a real pain in the but,the other down side is I live in Australia and to send it back to the States isn't cheap, other wise its been a great detector and was probably one of the first to hit our shores, this is my fourth Garrett and the only one I have had a problem with other than that its a killer machine ,any other suggestions on how to solve this hick up would be appreciated ......

I'm glad there is someone else with this problem....I think the guy I talked to at Garrett thought I was nuts...lol It is a killer machine, just needs a tweek or two to get the glitch out.

Ok you have got me thinking now..:stars: this has only started since I have put the 8x5 coil on so I will recheck all my connections and stick the original coil back on and see how we go,one other thing while we are on this thread I was worried My pro had a moisture problem as there is a moisture line across the screen ,Ive had it in water a few times and thought I might have a leak,my mate has the same machine but has never had it in water so I checked his and it has the same moisture line,it in no way affects it in any way and is visually ok ,I think it is a oil film between the screens and could make one think it is a water leak and cause panic, have a look it runs across the middle of the screen,no gripes from me just hope we can work the volume problem out ,good luck :beers:

Mine does it with the 5x8 or the big one. no moisture line in mine yet! MIne seems to be the connection.

I have the same oil line or whatever it is. If you use the small 5" x 8" coil, keep in minds that it is much more sensitive to tiny metal targets and coil wire movement. If you use a coil cover, clean out the collection of sand, and make sure the coil wire above the coil is not loose, as if it does move, it will sound off, making you think that there is a problem with the machine.

Coil wire is a;ways neatly and tightly wrapped also. The only place there is any slack is right at the connection and if I tighten it up completely, I get no sound at all. I must leave it loose somewhat to be able to use it. As I said it just continues to get worse.
