Does anyone find nickles with the exployer?

mitch

New member
I have good luck finding coins other than nickles. I am a beginner with the Exployer and pleased with my progress other than the lack of nickle finds. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi Mitch,

I find nickles with my explorer. Nickles will hit all around the area that a pull tab hits. So if perhaps you are discriminating out pull tabs, you may be losing out on nickles too. I have over 25 different pull tab samples that I have found and they all sound off differently, the majority of them sound like nickles.

Maybe you are not in a place where nickles are lost? Nickles are the least found coin for me. I think part of it is because they are heavy for their size and probably don't get lost as much. Just my thoughts.

Hi Mitch. I find lots of nickles with my Explorer. They will read about the same as a lot of pull tabs and in the digital screen they will be 4, 5 or 6. Most of my nickles were digital 6, but a some have been 5 and on rare occasions I have dug nickles reading 4. You will dig some pull tabs, but if you want nickles then expect to dig some pull tabs as well. Hope this helps....:) HH.

Like Ed said, if you have pull tabs discriminated out then you are missing nickles and you will also miss some gold rings as well. I found a ladies 14 kt ring set with eleven diamonds in it and if I would have had pull tabs discriminated out I would have missed it because it came in a solid 4 on digital. HH.

Hello Mitch, I find nickels but not in quantities as quarters, dimes, and pennies. I run digital alot and find them to be a 6 most of the time. Although I occassionally will find them to register a 5 on digital too. There was only 1 time I ever found a nickel reading a 4 in digital and the reason for this was because it was on edge. You will have to dig pulltabs to find nickels like the other postings say, but the good thing is if you dig the pulltabs, you will come across smaller gold rings and I would rather find gold rings than pulltabs and nickels so I hope these posts helps you find more nickels. Good luck.

I dig a ton of nickels with the Explorer 2, don't use digital but prefer smart screen, also dig a ton of pull tabs as well, no problem, along with nickels and tabs, come gold...you just need to decide if your willing to dig those signals...I've come across gold rings, a 1914-D Buffalo nickel in GREAT condition(which I sold on ebay for 40 bucks), have a 1915-D Buffalo on ebay now I dug, most are in terrible shape, but I still love digging them...good luck either way!

I concentrate on the higher signals because they can pay off. I have found plenty of buffalo and liberty nickles, in my opinion they are not worth my old knees efforts and I quit trying for them. I tried my best and got very good in my opinion on digging nickles (as in 1 nickel per 10 or so digs). I have never found a nickel worth more than $3.50. I personally would rather spend my time looking for better. If you want to dig for trash, go for it.

If you want "old" nickels, use sound 1st, they will sound like a GOOSE HONK! The curser on the screen, not counting war nickles or clad nickles, will be at the very bottom, just right of center of screen. Normally, the whole curser will be level with the bottom of the screen. Don't dig anything less than seven inches. Now, if your willing to do this, your a better hunter than I am, and you will increase your nickles. Happy Hunting...

For 2005, I found 1 Shield nickel, 33 V-nickels, 51 Buffalo nickels and 5 War nickels.

Finding nickels with this machine is easier than any other machine I have used.

I'm sorry Holedigger, but I have to disagree with you that digging pull tabs is a waste of time and only for two good reasons. First and probably most important is the fact that I have been fortunate to dig up over twenty gold rings in my collection of which five of them have diamonds and one ladies ring alone paid for my Explorer XS. That ladies ring was only about 6 inches deep and if I would have passed it up thinking it was only a pull tab it would still be there in the ground or someone else would have found it. My second reason for digging pull tabs is that it gets rid of a lot of junk in the ground and helps clear the way for finding other good finds that may have been close by or hidden by the pull tabs. Each month at my club meeting we have a contest for the most pull tabs found and the most coins for which the winner gets a walking liberty half dollar. Just another incentive to dig pull tabs not forgetting that it could be a nice diamond ring plus the pull tabs we all dig go to a charitable cause. My buddy always says,"if it beeps dig it"!! HH..........:)

1) carry a nickel with you. Before you start hunting, setup machine, then place nickel on ground and run coil over it. Does it sound off?
If NO - your disc is set too high. Move iron mask down if necessary and don't reject pulltabs.

2) use digital screen and note all 10-05, 09-05, or close to these numbers. Now listen to signal. If one dull beep - it's a nickel. If two beeps - it's either a pulltab or a ring.

I used to always carry a nickel with me when I used a VLF detector and 1st thing I'd check before hunting was the 'nickel test'. Disc set too high means missing nickels and missing rings. i found this out myself long ago by accident. I was using a compass X-100 and passed over a nickel sitting on top of ground that I could clearly see. No signal at all. Why? My disc was set a hair above notching out pulltabs and it was notching out nickels too!

I've been to school yards where there were more nickels than any other coin. Typically hunted by guys with disc too high to even hear them. That means most jewelry is also still sitting there waiting to be found.

Ex makes detecting nickels very easy if you know how. Soon you'll be digging more than you may want to see. Good luck! HH!

and I LOVE hitting nickels, especially at the beach. I used to use a lot of disc but now I basically use my ears to do the same thing...

most older nickels don't seem worth it, the gold makes to pull tabs worth it in my book. I've also dug a great 1914-D Buffalo I sold on ebay for $40.00 a couple years ago. Have a 1915-D on ebay now!! I understand your reasons, many times it seems a waste to dig a trashy shield, or a no date buffalo, but I don't think you dig many 1914-D wheats or 1921 Mercs either?? You know what you want to hunt for and I wish you luck, just might rethink you know. My dad's 73, uses a Minelab and has a 15 pulltab limit, after 15, UNLESS it really sounds great he stops, and he's got a few nice gld rings in his collection!

Those are some nice rings you have found there. Just dig the pulltabs to get the nickels and GO FOR THE GOLD!!! That is what I think.

I know where every single uk cupro nickel coin hits on my explorer , they are nothing but worthless junk. I have never known a single gold ring be detected in the nickel range on uk coins.
