Does anybody know what to expect???

I have been hearing a lot about NASA Tom's calibration and validation to the CZ-3D. Thinking this has to be a good thing to do, I contacted him and sent my CZ-3D in for the works. Now I am just waiting for it to come back and was wondering if anybody knows what I can expect?

Also wondering if this machine is a good all around hunter, or is it just for older coins?

I have had this machine for several months, but I don't have a lot of time hunting with it.

Thanks

Digger70pa uses his to relic hunt and he seems to do quite well with it. I think the CZ3D is a great all around do it all detector!! Coins, relics, and jewelry you had a great detector but you will probably have a awesome detector when you get it back!! :detecting:

The 3D that you get back will be calibrated correctly in the sense that in enhanced mode, it will ID in the ground, older nickels, Indian Head pennies and some small gold coins into the high tone category. The premise of the enhanced mode function is to use it in older areas where there is less aluminum trash. It can be used in that mode in more trashy areas, but will ID some pull tab pieces, small can slaw and other aluminum with a high tone ( which is where coins come in at). What you can do however, when hunting trashier areas in enhanced mode, is when a high tone target is hit, you can switch over to normal mode to see if it now hits as mid tone. This is a method to help eliminate some aluminum trash being dug.

IDing the older coins with a high tone allows one to coin hunt and concentrate on the high tones, leaving the mid and low tones in the ground due them being more of a probability of being trash (but as we all know, until you dig it up, you really don't know).

As far as depth goes, a Tom D calibrated 3D should ID a clad dime in an air test in the 11.8-12.2 inch range. This is with the stock 8 inch coil and the sensitivity in the 4.5-4.8 range. Only caveat with this test is, I do believe these numbers are for the older Los Banos tuned 3D's ( ones starting with the 1021 serial number and some with another number which I cannot remember...this is why you hear about the 1021 3D's being mentioned as hot ones). Apparently the newer 3D's are now tuned correctly as the procedure to tune them was changed, but some of the newer batches prior to this were not tuned the proper way and may have not been optimal in the depth department. I may be totally incorrect on this, but I think this is what I read on a post by Dave J awhile back, as he was trying to explain the myth behind only 1021 3D's being tuned correctly.

If yours is a newer unit, I am not sure how much more depth Tom D can squeeze out, but he will always re-calibrate to make sure it ID's the way it should.

In any event, you will have a really good all around unit to hunt with when it comes back from Tom D.

It is well worth the money spent to have it calibrated. I enjoy detecting but also want to know whether my detector is functioning properly. The CZ3D is an excellent detector and is probably one of the all time best detectors out there. Certainly in its price range...

The CZ3D's are great for relic hunting. It really likes lead minnie balls. It's not uncommon to dig 8-10" minnie balls with them. As far as having them calibrated I don't know. Anytime I coin hunted with mine it had a dead on TID. You have a deep machine. :fisher:

Wow, got more response than I expected, really appreciate the information. Got me all fired up, can't wait to get my CZ back.

Thanks all,

In my case with my newly calibrated CZ3D from him my first hunt netted a nice 1834 Half Dime. Later that day I pulled a 1941 Walking Liberty Half from another field. I have several detectors but enjoy using the CZ3 as much as any of them. Good luck with yours and let us know how things turn out.

Expect a deep well working unit when you get it back. As far as depth goes some CZ's are limited no matter who tunes them but Tom will get the most out of your particuliar unit...

It's all ground balancing often & at a high sensitivity when doing it.

Little update, the detector made it to the delivery van and was post on the tracking as out for delivery and it was lost. So now I really don't know what to expect will I get it tuned up or will I even get it back.

I have faith it will show up! I had Tom do my CZ-5 and F75SE. I honestly can't say they are better than before. I am pretty sure he rev up the 5 some anyway. But it is worth every penny to have confidence that they are running at peak performance. Tom also found that my 5 inch DD was not pulling as hard as it should and had a broken lead in the cable. Best with the delivery, Ron!
HH with the 3D!

+ 1 on the above info. Tom will let you now his findings before he works on it. Then , he will let you the final results after adjustments are made. Mine took one week , but we don't live very far apart. The other serial numbers are the early 1121's, still made in Los Banos. I have one & had Tom calibrate it, too.

Just got this from Tom D, sounds like he pulled it off the truck. Bottom line it y CZ is back on schedule.

Crazy postal day. After many debates with USPS................ bottom line.............. I got your detector. (It was already on the truck for Return To Sender). I have never had a problem with the post office. This is a first.

.......................... In any regard............ I shall commence tune-up/calibration/validation/certification of your First Texas CZ-3D within the next 24-hours. Will advise.

Sincerely,

Tom

All done and on its way back home.
