i found this piece last year relic hunting in central va. it resembles a j hook with a chain. is it a sword belt hanger with a chain? about 5 in. long. i dunno, maybe you do. thanks in advance for any info. hh,

More than likely it is part of a "curb chain" used on a solid shank horse bit. The hook on the bottom and the style of chain (size and loop pattern) are that of a curb chain. The way it goes under the horses lower jaw. It is hooked to both sides of the bit. When you pull back on your rains, the chain puts pressure on the lower jaw. This teaches your horse to be "light in the mouth". After some training, you can actually have the curb chain loose and just the feel of it there will make a horse stop on a dime when pressure is applied.

5" is about right as most modern bits are around 5.25". Most horse bits were smaller for saddle horses in the 19th century as they were small boned.

I would not say a sword chain due to the fact the rings are small and not made for weight bearing. Also the twist of the chain links would tear up the saddle skirts, trousers, belt, etc.

Now that I look at this chain closer, almost looks like the chain that attaches to the spring to close a screen door???
