i found this piece last year detecting in central va. it resembles a j hook with a chain. is it a sword belt hanger with a chain? i dunno so thats why im asking. any help is appreciated, thanks in advance, hh,
 
Sword belt hanger? Maybe. I dunno, either.

Might be some kind of snaffle bit?

... or some other part of a harness. Not being a horseman, I couldn't tell you. But I get an equestrian feeling from it...
 
Just a guess but it might be what a pocket watch was attached to back in the day. I could see putting the clip on your belt and the watch in your pocket. Again, just a guess.
