Does anybody do this?

I used to live in Dawsonville Ga, and there are a few area up in N. Ga to pan for gold. I was never really ever interested in doing that. Know that I have gotten into metal detecting. I was wondering if people take a detector in and kind of pre-scan the dirt before panning it out? Seems to me like it would speed up the process a great deal. I think you buy bags or buckets of dirt? So even using a pointer would help I would think. Anybody know anything about doing this? Of course I don't live anywhere near there now. We were going to head up that way for New years, just to beat the heat and get away from here for a little bit. I was thinking about maybe doing the pan for gold thing.

Hi Chris
I sure do! I have a placer claim here in Colorado, with a high bench that has a lot of gold in the flower to nice nugget size. I scan the gravels to find a small nugget and dig out the area and pan or run it in a Highbanker. I use a green water PI with 8" mono coil that has been a real gold producer like this. The detector will not find the flower gold but i have found that using the PI to find the little nuggets then running just the gravel in the pocket I get more gold in less time and just running large amounts of low grade material. I managed to take about 7 oz this summer from the claim by doing this.
Good Luck and may your pan always be yellow.
