Doc's Treasure Screamer Excalibur

Just got a Whites dual field a month ago and wanted to do a side by side on how well this detector performs on the beach at OC Maryland. The Df struggles with the high mineral content of Ocean City's Wet Beach's, I have done this little compare at the inlet and around 73rd street, with the same results. Using Hot settings from what I have read on the forums. and going as far as trying the factory settings. I would say this detector is deeper then the regular excal & excal II, but not as deep as the Garrett Infinium which is a Pi also. Doc's TS Excalibur seems to be better suited for the conditions at this beach and is able to pull the deeper targets, only because of using the AM/PP Mode and Doc's Treasure Screamer Amp. I was hoping that the Amp may help pull some of the faint whispers of the Dual field also but at this beach there was so much chatter that it cover up all hints of any thing, maybe at another beach this will work..I do have plans for future compares, at different locations, any suggestions are more then welcome (settings, swing speed, anything) Would like to hook up with a Df Pro to even out the playing field in the future and to learn...............joe

Super nice Vids as always OBN. What's in the closet? Almost afraid to ask lol.

joe, do you have this book.....

The White

Nice video ...
Firstly I have been using the DF and have tried every imaginable setting possible ... from what I can see I dont think you seem to be undertsnding how to use the Df at its proper potential.
The thing with the DF is it is "chattery" no matter which beach you are at even at no beach in the middle of nowhere. As you crank it up it chatters ,this is the nature of the machine. So once this is understood and accepted by the user you will find that it is just a matter of filtering out the chatter and listening for the real target tone and even the very faint signals are easily distinguishable. Now the good thing with this machine is it never rarely falses (only sometimes when you bump it in the sand)
The best settings I have found is on any beach is...
1...Use Alkaline batteries and if you are fussy like me and want full power check that the voltage is above 11.75 volts ...I have found that as the batteries lose power depth is lost aswell...but in saying this the batteries do last a long time.
2...Gain at full ...dont touch the pulse delay...and turn the threshold so the chatter is lightly audible.(and adjust only threshold as nessacery )
3...Swing at medium pace ,if you swing fast you will miss deep targets and small targets...

and as recomended do get clives book and read the whole book....

I have been using the DF here in OZ during the winter months on cleaned out beaches and I have recovered a lot of stuff others have missed out on...Cheers

Thanks Gonga...for the tips..I will give clives book a shot also seeker & Gonga and the other tips are great...I do know it takes time with any detector............Max...Got a package coming for the xxxxxxxx................should be up and running for the next road trip in Jan........., .joe

Can you put an old NY Excal and a CZ20 or CZ21 to the test also?

OBN, wondering if you have used a CZ-20/21 ? My question is if the audio boost on the CZ. Is the same thing as using the Amp on the Excall? Also can you share the info on your camera setup??

I rarely work the wet and dry sand, preferring the excitement of the Mine and I am also fortunate that the mineralization in Bermuda is essentially zero; that said I find that the Dually hits the deepest and I run with the settings maxed out, the CZ-21 comes in 2nd for depth and the Excal a close third. The Whites Dually hits a good 6" deeper than the CZ-21 on a plain gold band and the Excal 1000 is probably just an inch or so less than the CZ-21, so close it hardly makes any difference.
What is annoying about the Dually and all PI's for that matter is the lack of discrimination - my favorite detector is my Excal 1000 because it is just more fun to hunt with even if it is a little shallower on depth.
Take the mineralization out of the equation and the Dually really rocks the house.

Cheers,

BDA:cool:

PS: I've been away for a bit so this amplifier of Doc's has me curious, is it submersible?

Nice to see you back BDA. It's been awhile.

Yeah, I've been a little busy. My 6 year maximum residency is coming to an end in Bermuda so I'm selling all my stuff and going around the world for the next year or two. When I find a country with a nice climate and good looting I'll park my butt again.:crylol:

BDA I wish it was submersible....I think the Df will shine out in the water here also, I think every detector has it place, some just work better then others, in different conditions and places.......Hey BDA, which is deeper for you in the water there, PP or disc with the Excal?.......joe

EZ I used 2 here first was the Zi8, the other is the tachyon HC, 8 hours recording WP to 30 feet I think, mounted to peltor 101's, switching back to the 105's soon

On the CZ, I love it and tried the Amp on the LS, DF, excal..just felt the CZ did not need it....................boost the same, thinking about it I would say no, but going to experiment with all..when I get more time...retirement 29 months.....joe

hey joe,
how do you think this amp set up will work on my excal 2 1000???
just your thoughts

Bermuda has such wierd geological strata that my settings tend to be very different from the continental U.S, there is zero mineralization here because the islands (all 181 of them) are actually coral sediment that has built up on top of a volcanic spike that sticks up in the middle of the Atlantic. There isn't even any industrial production to add mineralization and the basalt is 50 ft below the surface at it's closest approach.
PP gives me less depth than disc running is silent mode with sensitivity at 2 to 3 o'clock depending upon surf conditions. Salinity and surf bounce are my biggest obstacles to stability but I run with a fair amount of static to max out depth.
The Dually is the big gun in my arsenal, when the sand is in, that's what I fall back on. Th LS Infinium gave me a headache when I borrowed one from a Mate of mine, it sounded like nails on a blackboard to this pirate and I just couldn't enjoy the hunt listening to what sounded like somebody killing cats with a mallet, ringing in my ears. I liked the depth and the high/low disc but I couldn't take the sound frequency - that's just me though.
Right now I am trying to decide which detector to take with me on my RTW trip - I've narrowed it down to the CZ-21 vs the Dually but I can't make up my mind. Maybe I will take them both with me to South America and see how it goes for a while; sell the one that produces less.
I really need to have my Excal overhauled, it's gathering dust in a closet. Minelab doesn't seem too excited about fixing it and they definitely don't want to modify it in any way shape or form.:( That company seems to have gone to the dogs since it got bought out and went all corporate security, a bummer because I am a dyed in the wool Minelab guy . Do you know anybody who will trick out an old Excal? I've been thinking Mr.Bill might be the way to go but I can't say for sure.

Cheers,

I agree about the Ls but it does well here in the Bay, that's why I am thinking DF..........with disc being the less of PP, the Amp may not work there on the excal........May have to do a cruz in the far future....................to check that out...................................Hey Enjoy the aRound the world trip.................Pic's please.Good Luck, be safe..........joe

Not very well at the moment, Max. That last hurricane pulled tons of sand off the beach and dumped it on top of the sanding in I was already dealing with this summer. I went from having 3 feet of sanding in to 5 feet of sanding in, really cramped my style.
I cashed in around $9k with ARA this year though, so it's not like it is all bad news.:clapping:

Cheers Mate,

I'll be posting pics on the 20th Century Tales part of the forum because not everything we will be doing will be diving/treasurehunting related. I can tell you right now that I won't be doing any treasurehunting in Antarctica, gives me chillblanes just thinking about it. Thanks for the email for Mr. Bill.

Cheers Joe,
