Do you use headphones when you metal detect???

I'm just wondering, I don't, only because my machine didn't come with any. Does it make a deference??? One time I was MD by an expressway, I wish I had a pair, it was too noisy. And if you do, are they top-end, middle of the road, or lower-end headphones. I figure I should get some eventually, and I'm not sure if the expensive ones are necessarily the best. Thanks for your input...

Get them now!!!!!! You're missing more than you might think. Get a good set that will last you for awhile and are comfortable. That constant beeping is not pleasant to most people, I know it irritates me if I'm not detecting and I see someone that is detecting without phones. Not to mention you are wasting precious battery life by not using them.

Most of the time yes, night hunting I pull one ear cuff off so I can hear around me. I worked the beach last month without a pair and with the wind I was missing tones. If I work a area like a park with kids always other wise they wonder everytime you hit a peice of trash and it creates to much of a distraction. I would rather not anyone hear the tones.

Yes I use them why?
1. the sounds may annoy others
2. you hear MUCH more with them
3. battery life
4. your not distracted as much by your surroundings
5. You can ignore annoying people if you want.("you can't hear them" )

I agree with everyone else. I want to add that they give you the option whether you want to talk to somebody or not. If I don't, I yell at them, "I can't hear you. I have headphones on".

John thats what I meant.:poke:

I use a set of real small phone as speakers, but I don't actually wear em..
I just use them so the volume is real low vs the loud speaker.
But I don't like or even need them on my head..

I would not think of hunting without headphones. I am so used to them ,Just hunting my own yard I use them. Not considerate of others if you don't. Plus you increase the life of your batteries by at least two-fold.....Jack

I always use them, though sometimes I have them on my head and not on my ears. Some of the places I hunt are not in the friendliest neighborhoods. I like to be able to hear what is happening around me too.

Twice when people were walking by and thought I couldn't hear them I heard the wife say in a nasty tone "I wonder if that guy found my wedding ring"? I didn't but I felt like saying "no, where did you lose it" just to see their reaction.

In case you need a bit of bludgeoning - get some headphones!

I think the power needed to "transport" the signals (sound) trough the air is greater then the one needed to go trough the copper wire often used in the headphones.
Maybe someone can tell better then me, I can't recall all the names of that stuff.

Yes I use them. I have used them from the time I started MDing. So, it's all I know. But I do have to uncover one ear in some places to be on the safe side.

Dunno. If it really draws that much more power using the internal
speaker, it would almost surely be because the audio amp is putting
out more power, and drawing more current. Being I always have
phones plugged in, I've never compared, or noticed any difference.
But it takes less power to drive most phones than it does a speaker.
The only thing.. The audio amp is set at the same volume no matter
what.. Many phone jacks use a resister to lower the power to the
phones, but it shouldn't really effect current draw of the audio amp
too much.
I'm really surprised it makes that much difference..
I've never used the stock speaker cuz it's way too loud for my tastes.
My lightweight phones used as speakers are just right.. I can hear
it no problem, but not many others do..
