Do you think the concentric coil will perform in iron as good as the DD coil? Especially seperating good targets from iron.

You Know its hard to tell. I have been suprised by concentrics in the past. I think the thinking part of the AT pro is a little better than average (or a 250). I will be looking for some good posts.

Interesting question Bill.

Concentric coil signals enter the ground in a cone shape and are deeper seeking.
DD coil signals enter the ground in a long narrow strip down the center of the coil and are better for mineralized soils.

Just from the way the signals enter the ground I would say it would be easier to acquire a better target separation from the DD coil over the Concentric. They both may work well because of the processor and computer system Garrett has installed. I think with the concentric coil your machine would have to process much more information on targets in close proximity while with the DD coil you can slide in next to a good target close to iron and pick it out easier. On deep targets in neutral soil a concentric coil may be better if the iron object in outside the detection field of the concentric signal or the machine is able to let the good target ring through next to iron.

Here is what I mean and is just my opinion and idea of how the coils work. The drawings I did show a concentric coil vs a dd coil from side view and front view with a simulated nail and the round red object representing a good target.

As you can see by the representation that I have drawn. There is a great need for adequate overlapping of your swings with a concentric coil especially on deep targets.

Either way, the AT Pro can give you a iron grunt and still allow a good signal to ring through or mask the iron tone and just sound off on the good target. But if you have have less information for the computer to process it results in quicker target acquisition, quicker target recovery and more time to dig the next target.

Good question. We dont have to many saltwater beaches here in Oklahoma for me to test on! Wish i could help!

I don't think Bill's question was necessarily geared toward detecting on a salt water beach. Just the performance of the DD coil vs Concentric where iron exists next to good targets. As far as a salt water beach goes a DD coil will penetrate the salt water beach better than a concentric and then the Mono coils are deepest but they are on a PI machine.

Some of the best areas to test these two coils would be at an old home place where a house or barn had been torn down and good targets exist among nails and other iron junk.

Hey, I enjoyed our talk the other day when I called you, I appreciate the conversation. Being on the beach would sure beat going to work tonight and writing tickets and sending folks to jail.

I have my beach vacation set up, just have to wait a few months for it to get here.
