Do you like your MXT stock coil?

I'm on the fence about my MXT Pro Stock Coil. I was thinking about it this past fall thinking I had used it and was missing targets. They say it is a deep coil, but I haven't found that to be the case. I get better detection with another coil I own and was thinking of selling it?? It IS supposed to be a deep coil right?....Then why was I only finding shallow targets? Your thoughts? Do you like your MXT stock coil? Just curious how others view their stock coil.
If so or if not ....why?

If you are talking about the 12"coil it is to big for most hunting it is vary good in open ground and will go deep a good all around coil is the D2 or my favorite is the 6x10 eclipse DD

X2 what DiggerD said.

I also use the 6X10 DD,..HOWEVER...your asking about depth. You should clearly have the edge in depth. Be sure you ground balance properly. Also,if your working a trashy area you will be hindered by the junk with a large coil. Inrelatively clean ground you should do better.
I work a lot of school yards and other trashier areas which require a coil that seperates better, but also sacrifices a bit of depth.

never used it, but I've been hearing is deep, my stock is the 950.

I would recommend you to have a small coil in your arsenal

Hi Whitetail, Thank of it this way, If you have a silver Dime at 6" and a zinkon at 2" what are you going to get? You will get the Zinkon and not even know the dime is there. If you have that same silver dime at 9" in clean ground, no trash or other money close then you hit the dime low and clear.Anything that is with-in the 10" of the stock coil will come in first. That is why people use small coils. The stock coil is very good coil, i have hit dimes at 11" in fields that are hard to get to, That way on one has trashed it. Anything that is metal will hit first, foil nails, pulltabs, Try and find a place that you think no one has been, and see how much trash and coils are there. You will be Surprised. Good Luck Flintstone

The stock coil is my "GO TO" coil most of the time. I have the 950 stock and many many other coils. But I must say it's my favorite for hunting deep targets, HH, Nancy

I use the stock 950 on the older MXT:thumbup:

Nancy, I can't understand how that is your "go to" coil? I have used it and I don't believe I ever got a silver coin with it? Most of the coins are shallow it seems that I was finding. All I know is when I switched to the SEF coil, I began finding some really great stuff. I can't explain it?
I do remember cutting a hole in the back yard and dropping a coin down the bottom...say 7"....It wouldn't even read it and that was without putting the plug back on top of it? Now you have me wondering if there is something wrong with my coil?

To clarify, your referring to the 950 right? The 300 or super 12" came stock on some of the MXT's but the MXT Pro came with the 950 unless you requested a substitute. If yours cannot detect a coin at 7" with nothing over it there may very well be a problem with the coil. In "some" real world scenarios, 7" can be tough to achieve if the ground is harsh or trash/iron nearby/over the target. You should contact Whites and see what they would do for you. I don't know what their policy is with bad coils but they have the best reputation when keeping customers happy.

Whitetail, My first thoughts exactly, something must be wrong with your stock coil. I think it needs to be sent in. HH, Nancy

I havn't used my 12" coil much at all. I know that it is not as sensitive to small targets as the smaller coils are so its possible it just cannot see the smaller coins that you tested at any significant depth. Its designed for VERY clean ground since it will not handle highly mineralized ground. The reason is because it has to look through a lot of ground at the same time due to the shape and size. Its also a deep coil as long as the target is large enough to bounce enough signal back to the coil. If you think of it this way, the coil transmits a signal down and listens for any signal bounced back. The bigger the target the more signal bounced back. If you have a giant coil and small target, the target is not able to bounce enough signal back to be noticed. But the same target can easily be seen by a small coil.
I'm sure Nancy was referring to the 950 as her go-to coil as it is also many others favorite coil. The 12" has its place but its a place I rarely frequent. I've heard some people say they use the 12" most of the time, but I think you need to match the coil with the type of hunting your doing and it just doesn't fit most situations. If your in a clean field that you cleaned out with smaller coils, a 12" will find some deeper targets missed by the other coils as long as the target is fairly large. It will definitely find belt buckles deeper than most coils but really small items not so much.

My stock (have the original mxt) 950 coil has very good depth, mostly use it in woods and at the beach. Use the 3x9 jimmy sierra for parks and dense target areas.

Im lookin at a whites catalog they just sent me and the MXT Pro has a 12 inch 300 on it-- the MXT has a 9.50

Yeah it looks like the pro was sold with the 300 as the stock coil. A lot of people find it too susceptible to mineralization and trash. It does good in areas where the ground is mild or low trash.

Whitetail, what coin did you use for the test when you dug a hole and put the coin in the hole? Does it airtest the same? The ground could have been causing the detector to null if there is a rejected target within the coils vision. Thats very possible with a large concentric and the reason DD coils are used in trashy areas because they separate so well. With a 12" concentric coil, you could have a trash target that is rejected and a good target 5 or 6 inches to the side and possibly not be able to separate the two. I know that the D2 can separate two targets within an inch of each other when aligned the right way with the coil.(rotating 90 degrees may cause the target to null) Most concentric coils will be detecting both targets at the same time, sometimes causing a nulling other times falsing. Nulling is when the junk causes the detector to stay silent due to the discriminator and it has no chance to respond to the good target.
What is the other coil you mentioned that works better? Even if you compare the 950 to the 300, the 950 will work better in many scenarios. Larger is not always better but in some places it can be. If you find a farm field with very little trash and mild ground, you would probably find out the 300 acts much differently than it does in your back yard.

I was testing my coil in my back yard where I dug a hole and dropped in a dime, quarter, silver coin..etc...I kept trying different stuff to see how the coil red. I can remember that I put the plug back on top of the items and then swung the coil over it. It was very inconsistent on picking up those various items. NOW....what I didnt' tell everyone was my backyard of my 1800s home is littered with old iron square nails....years ago I found out there was a fire and much of the back of the home was destroyed....and later rebuilt. I wonder if I have some of the iron masking you were referring to Aaron going on?
I've used this same coil at the beach and it was awesome...so as stated by some...perhaps it just has its place of where it can and cannot be used??

I know there are coins hiding amongst all those nails. I've used the 4x8SEF for a year in my back yard playing around and I "think" I've dug everything I can....but I know there must be more silver in my yard. Only found 1 silver dime on the larger side of my house...but lots of wheat pennies from the 20's,
30's and 40's. I'm wondering if a 5.3 will provide the separation I need or do you think the 4x8 SEF has already done that? I'm almost to the point of digging up this certain area and litterally screening out everything iron over a wheel barrow to remove much of the bad stuff. It's not really a green grass area I'd be damaging anyways? Any thoughts?
