Do you hunt in all metal on the Sov for coins?

kickback

New member
Just reread Clives book on the Sov. and Excal. He says he hunts in all metal most of the time.Do any of you guys hunt in all metal with the Sov. for coins? Thanks in advance.Bill

Always. Because if you run in all metal, you get less nulling and don't constantly lose your threshold. Which will enable you to hear everything and dig what sounds good. And give you the best chance of pulling a silver dime out of a trash pile or a nail bed. That's how I hunt.

Most of my hunting is for coins in parks, ball field, school and were ever people have been so most is loaded with trash from over the years. In this case I couldnt move 10 feet a day as there would be so many signals I would wear out the toggle switch check it in disc in one day and not move very far.
Also in disc when you get to know the Sovereign I find I can get signals i cannot get in all metal that are deep coins in the disc mode as the threshold tone only changes a little letting me know I need to swing over that area a little to work the tone up.
Now if you have the disc set to minn or all the way counter clockwise it is not all metal and this is where many of us run our Sovereign so we reject iron only and yet still have the tones you do not get in all metal, so you have to switch to disc to check each one out.

Bill I think Clive mentions in his book he is a canadian hunter and some of the canadian coins have iron in them. that is one of the reasons he went the route of learning to hunt in all metal.

When you have dozens of pieces of trash, many of them bits of old nails, under the coil at the same time???????
Forget it!!!

Only possible exception would be with the GT. Using the shift high tone ability would get the zincs and higher, but also the screw caps and silver jewelry.
The intensive tone variations would drive you buggy. You would also get the positive iron hits that you get in disc mode.

I guess it depends on your location, patience and how strong your back is and like the point about Canadian coins..All in all for the average coin hunter hunting with a low disc
in the discrimination mode usually is the best way to go. Remember reading something about hunting in all metal using a type of reverse discrimination but to me appeared too tedious and time consuming...Certainly lots of good reading material out there but do expect plus and minus suggestions and hunting techniques...

Clive's book does have a lot of info about HUNTING in A/M and it seems to work for him, I tried it but can't stand the noise.
Having said that , I do not hesitate to switch to A/M Fixed to CHECK iffy targets. I leave the A/M switch set to FIXED. This allows a one step mode change between Disc and Fixed A/M. On targets that you want to check, switch to A/M and do the wiggle and sniff the target just as you would in Disc. It is a fast and easy way to get added target info with or without a meter I have found that A/M produces a coin signal that I believe is more accurate then a meter number at depth. HH

.................I don't think that it is necessary...............at least my Sovereign seems to be more powerful in the Discriminate Mode!! I only use the All-Metal mode to help pin-point......................JOE

I've been thinking of doing the same. I'm a dig all type of hunter anyways.
As for now though I hunt in disc mode with it of course turned all the way down.

Now with disc turned all the way down is it basically in all metal then?

You have the right idea, but I also need to add that mis-spoke. When I said "All Metal" what I meant was no disc. As others have pointed out, that isn't the same thing. You DO want the variable tones and you WILL get a lot less nulling due to the low disc. I usually hunt in Disc with no notch and no disc. I also like to turn off the iron mask.
