How many of you prefer to grid out an area and want to know if you got everything. I'm not sure I want to know if everything is gone from a area. I know, you probably can't get everything due to a bunch of thing's, but I kinda like the feeling that a random of search of a park will leave a few thing's for next time. You know, kind of like Bryce did the other day when he found that seated dime in a park that has been hammered to death. I can see a few places where gridding out a place would be a good thing to do, say a small Civil War encampment where you may never get the chance to return to. Then find as much as you can.I've just been thinking,it's snowing and frozen outside and thought I'd ask. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gary

I use 2 strings spaced a swings distance apart sometimes. It really helps if you want to cover the ground really good.

I have such a large area to hunt (36,000 acres) that I use a hand held GPS to mark where I park my truck then the next time if that marked L.L. (Longitude, Latitude) comes up I know I have worked that area before. I work a circular pattern around and spirally out from my truck. This is a state beach park that I can drive on and all over. (Pismo Beach) I will never hunt it all in my life time.

I JUST DRAG MY LESCHE SHOVEL, AND IT LEAVES A NICE LINE IN THE DIRT:detecting:
I MAINLY HUNT OLD HOME SITES, WERE THERE ISN'T ANY GRASS THOUGH

P.S. just realized my cap lock was on:sadwalk:

A fellow line up an area with stakes and strings..Hunt in all metal and then disc. and make some nice finds in beat areas..Lots of work and digging..On a beach against the tide line work an S pattern and then look back and definetly will see the hot spot line from the holes and just work this line which really works...Heck even saw fellow walk backwards on a beach to cover different areas...

I use a grid all the time on the beach, use my scoop to mark where I have been, I always overlap a bit. In a field, I use a GPS unit to mark where I started also. I have used string before but was careless and got all tangled up and was a mess so now I use little flags to mark areas pre work, and pick them up when I finish that area works for me.

This spring I will have a new GT to learn and I think I will measure out a square of about 10ftx10ft and dig everything to learn the tone's and what the machine is capable of. I suppose this is a type of grid, but I still like the idea of not knowing for sure I got everything. Thank's for responding.

Digging everything and listening close to everything will both train your ears, and tell you what you can expect to find for both the good and the bad stuff in that area.
Anything that sounds different from anything you have heard should be dug up to see what it is. Don't dig too fast...spend plenty of time playing around with the target so it will sound familiar next time.
