do you document your finds?

hello everyone. do you document your finds? and if so, how? how important do you think it is? do you think what you document now will be relevant later on? i went for many years without documenting a thing. as i get older, i've noticed my memory isn't as good as it used to be. i'm paying dearly for it now. i finally started to write everything down and trying to preserve the pieces in my collection during the winter months. it's the old game called catch - up. i understand treasurefiend has a good spreadsheet for finds, but i'm not ready for that yet. your thoughts on this matter, please. hh,

Hay Gray Ghost,

I have not loged much of anything.

I have some info on sites, but not finds.

I wish I had just kept my finds.

My best coin finds came over 24 years ago.

I can not locate any of it. Not even my old Technatics.

HH,

I doccument my finds on a per hunt basis. I created a counter and add to it each hunt. Another less techy device I use is a 3x5 notebook. I write all my finds in one of these books. They are cheap and I can write it down very quickly. I even record all the clad, Beale.

I use three different kinds of logs. You may think this is overkill but they each have something different to offer.

One is "Clad Counter" (http://www.terrybullard.com/clad_counter.html). This also lets you produce and print a report by location, month, year. It's handy and easy to use. I really like this one.

Another is "Treasure Journal". You'll have to do a search look up for this. It's great for listing items, but it's draw back is that you can't print any of the information if you want a hard copy.

The last is just a simple one that I made using Microsoft Excel. It keeps track of the coins, jewelry and other finds. I can enter the amounts and I can print a report anytime I want.

There you have it. Three different types that all work well using your computer. As others have said you can just use a pen, paper and a journal to record your entries if you like.

Happy Hunting!!! :detecting:

I used to. I kept a "Site Log" and in it were details about the sites I visited, and the finds I made there.
I had files on all the sites I had visited, map research, leads etc.
There was a separate section with find totals for coins, jewelry and items of interest.
It was all housed in a three ring binder and in file card boxes.
I was quite pedantic about it, even obsessed. Yet in all the years of anal record keeping, I never did find Eldorado. Hope springs eternal, they say, but sooner or later every well dries up.

So, I have become more casual about it all now, realizing that I cant take it with me, either way. I still have the files, though, and refer to them from time to time.
