do you document your finds?

GRAY GHOST

hello everyone. do you document your finds? how important do you think it is? do you think what you document now will be relevant later on? i went for many years without documenting a thing. as i get older, i've noticed my memory isn't as good as it used to be. i'm paying dearly for it now. i finally started to write everything down and trying to preserve the pieces in my collection during the winter months. it's the old game called catch - up. i understand treasurefiend has a good spreadsheet for finds, but i'm not ready for that yet. your thoughts on this matter, please. hh,

I did when I first started , but just got lazy and started putting
the finds in boxes. I really wish I had kept it up now

Yes, I do.I have note books full of info.I write down:
Date
Site locaton
What machine I'm using
Each denomination and how many found
The year and mint mark of any coin earlier than 1962
Total number of coins
Total face value of days finds
Total value of coins to date
Discripton of each of any other items found
(gold ring 14K)(silver necklace 925)(toy car)etc
Any other info I feel necessary
At the end of the year I compose a file of totals of each coin
When I sell any thing, that info is filed
Waterbug

I record numbers of gold, silver, curio and other items of interest with a notation of k weight, 925/sterling and the date of silver coins. All clad found gets separated by coin type and when cleaned and cashed in, I record the $ amount and also the $ amount I receive when ever I sell off jewelry and silver coins. After 34 year's of swinging, I've got notebooks full of recordings that I do find fun to look at from time to time. Family members, wife, sons and grandchildren, are always interested in my finds, but I don't have the sence my notebooks of finds will ever be "fireside" reading for them when I'm gone. HH jim tn

I used to keep track, but the it was just a hassle. Especially if you had a bad detecting day!!! I used to write a journal for a while. That was much more fun reading than a spread sheet of information. Wish I kept up the journal. It tells you more of the interesting facts other than what you found. The weather, the feeling of popping out that silver. The expression on you significant other's face when you bring home the bacon:blink:  Now I just group my finds and only clean the ones I have time to or are really important. Just the good stuff, not those darn shot gun shells or ox knobs:rant: HH

I keep track of my finds.

If you want my spreadsheet, just send me a PM with you email address. I will send it on out to you.

I use to keep a journal myself but started to include personal things other then detecting in it. I wonder what ever happened to that? GULP!

I would be looking for mine , LOL. I bought a truck a few years ago from a
friend and found his journal he kept while going thru a divorce, I didnt have the
guts to tell him I found it, let alone I had read it  :crylol:

I use three different kinds of logs. You may think this is overkill but they each have something different to offer.

One is "Clad Counter" (http://www.terrybullard.com/clad_counter.html). This also lets you produce and print a report by location, month, year. It's handy and easy to use. I really like this one.

Another is "Treasure Journal". You'll have to do a search look up for this. It's great for listing items, but it's draw back is that you can't print any of the information if you want a hard copy.

The last is just a simple one that I made using Microsoft Excel. It keeps track of the coins, jewelry and other finds. I can enter the amounts and I can print a report anytime I want.

There you have it. Three different types that all work well using your computer. As others have said you can just use a pen, paper and a journal to record your entries if you like.

Happy Hunting!!! :detecting:

ya i document them kinda. just basic info like date item and where found which machine and setting. helps me to determine where to go for those short hunts. :)
