Do you all use a coil cover?

I was wondering if you all use a coil "scuff pad" or coil cover for your coils? If not, why?

I do. I often detect in areas of rough ground, rocky and sandy areas so the extra protection is good in my opinion. Many say they don't use them, but a cover is definitely less expensive than replacing a coil. If you use, it's a good idea to take them off now and then and clean any accumulated sand or soil from inside them as this can cause false signals. Or seal them with silicon or similar, but then you have that to deal with if you want to remove the cover. If you only hunt grassy areas, there's probably not much need for a cover but as I said, I use them. It's kind of a pay your money and make your choice decision.

I do! They cost alot. I treat them as i would my truck. Clean them and no scatches.

Read the coil cover post in Metal Detecting forum........ some great info there..

Let me start with:

Why did I use them back then?

From 1968 through about 1983 I would sometimes use a coil cover once they became an accessory. Prior to 1968 (starting with the kit-built detector in early '65) and even until early '69, I used mainly BFO models. In '70 and '71 I started using mainly TR's and then TR-Discriminators. For those not familiar with those ancient designs, they didn't have any ground compensation (Ground balance) yet, and many also didn't have Discrimination, either. Most manufacturers didn't even offer such a thing as a "skid plate" or "scuff cover" or "coil cover", whatever name they gave them. Those accessories came along later after people learned improved technique and that could cause wear and tear.

Before we had the addition of auto-tune circuitry, those early T/R or T/R-Disc. models had only a Tuner control. (That's actually the proper name for the control that lets you 'tune' a proper Threshold audio hum.) Yes, maybe a Sensitivity control or another knob or two, but really the main adjustment was the Threshold Tuner control. Detectors working on the conventional T/R (Transmit/Receive) or T/R-Disc. principle were mostly
