Do Target ID numbers change when a target is out of the ground?

Hi guys,

Look time lurker, seldom poster. I bought my AT Pro for Xmas, replacing a Master Hunter CX. Quite a difference in technology and weight! This past month, I've found my first two gold rings in the Pro. One is a small 10k ladies HS ring, and the other is a thin 14k band. Both items showed up in the mid/high 40s on the target ID. After examining these finds, being still rather new with the AT Pro, I wanted to remind myself where they fell on the target ID. Putting both items on the ground in clean areas, I noticed the IDs were bouncing around from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. With all of that bouncing around, I wouldn't bothered digging them in the first place. Do target IDs really change when the target is out of the ground like that, or should I quite drinking while I'm out detecting? Thanks.

First, congrats on the rings! Now, don't focus too much on the numbers; the VDI readouts are just one data point in your entire assessment. You almost need to close your eyes and listen to the sounds as a whole.

I agree with ajaj.. you mainly listen to the tone(sound). I have found over 14 gold rings within 6 months of detecting (parks only). I haven't run across one that has a jumping numbers(not yet) in the ground or out it's pretty much solid and clean sound. Congrate on your finds.

You are definitely right on that AJ. While these two targets were both in the upper end of the tin foil range, and while I've dug up a lot of tinfoil on both of those days, the sounds themselves were sharper, and the pinpointing gave me small, thin coin-size target "blips" rather than bigger and/or irregular sounding pinpoints that piece of foil do.

Also remember when the coil is just an inch away it will cause a reflection, almost a feedback. So it is best to test a target from about four inches away.

I have to confess I don't dig anything less than 60. Where I am most of the time it is garbage. I turn on iron audio and there is so much iron and just garbage. Did you have iron audio on? Did the 40 sound fluctuate? I need to dig more I guess. Great job on the finds!

I do not dig anything below 45 (at pro) But on the beach I'll dig almost all #s from 30 up sand is easy to dig. But it's the sound

That's pretty darn good for your first month on a new machine! :clapping:
