Do shops let you borrow a detector?

My nephew is thinking of getting a metal detector since his son has taken a liking to it. I was wondering if metal detecting shops often let a beginner borrow a detector to find what they like?

Probably depends on the particular dealer. Some do offer rentals which may be a decent way to go.

yes, I've heard of dealers doing that. And/or they rent them out too.

Thanks guys. Since he lives in the western suburbs of Chicago, I did find Windy City Detector web site that says rentals.

Windy City is a good company to do business with.

My dealer rents an Ace 100. Usually for people who are looking for something they lost. He can't lend or rent a high cost machine because then it becomes a used machine.....Jack

Thanks Jack. I was hoping that it might be common that some dealers had used machines that they would let you try out in order to get a sale of a new machine.

Check and see if there are any local clubs close. Most are happy to help new people and usually plenty of models. HH :minelab:

Thanks hershey1, that's a good idea. I googled trying to find clubs in his area, but couldn't find any. I think what he could do is call some of the shops and get information on any clubs.

The dealers around me ( both of them) Always let me try a new detector before I buy it. They have demo models that they let me use.
