Do rain gutter sluices actually work, even a little?

I have read quite a few times over the years that they do work, but am wondering how well they work. I may not be sluicing millions of dollars worth of gold, but I still want to catch the specks.

There good for going thru your concentrates . Good at catching the small stuff . They say the way to go now days is to get one of those cubes, haven't tried one my self yet .

The gutter sluice is really for cons. They work great for that. My dad has run probably a ton of cons through one. You could try a Henry poop tube sluice. I have used one before. They are light weight and work surprisingly well.

I got me some 6 inch piping that has drops in it or ridges they use it in gardens or for culverts i guess. But cut them in half and they work good if you clean it up after 3 buckets or so and make sure they are not moving around much. I just take one about 15 inches with me when i am exploring and don't want to carry a sluice.

Everything that goes through them must be classified down to the size of the rubber V mat height. Otherwise it just flips, flops and adios. Same as McCain,Keene,GPAA concentrators and all devices with V mat. If it can't fit down inside the V to be held in place,it'll run for sure, especially flat flakes. Only small amounts of cons and clean often.John

A frind of mine has the cube, and it dose a very good job. Sometimes i use it and rerun my cons that i pan, and i though i was a good pannier, that thing will tell you the truth. If you can use one put your cons that you have already run in it and see what you missed.

Ok, thank you for all of your replies.

Now I have another question- how low do I need to classify the concentrates in order to have the best results using one of these sluices. Right now I have them classified to the Garrett 1/4 inch I believe. I would imagine classifying them even more would work even better with a sluice.

id go smaller depends on the size of the gutter drops. 1/4 of a inch is way to big for even my 6 inch tube i use. I use a 1/8 inch and it still catches rocks. A 1/8 inch or smaller id recommend.

I agree, 1/8th should work good. But if you make your own gutter sluice you can make it a little longer and add more aggressive(deeper) mat , and then you could probably run 1/4 size , as long as you don't try running to much thru it at one time.

Go find one of these and line your gutter with it. It doesn't need classifying and catches the small stuff. I ran 3 sections of it in my dredge. each section was 12" long. On the first clean up the first section had 99% of the gold recovered. The second section had the rest the last section had no gold. All gold was fine to very fine. Nearly a 1/4oz in a 2" dredge. I havent tried it in a gutter but it does work.http://www.houzz.com/photos/3464399/Spruce-With-Daisy-Doormat-contemporary-doormats-other-metro

Thanks for the help everyone. I am gonna start working on this project soon. Thanks again.
