Do Minelabs go deeper than Whites?

Seems to me that I see a lot of deeper targets on the Minelab forum. With my 6x10 DD coil on the MXT I tend to max out at around 5-7 inches, yet the minelab forum consistently has targets that are 8,9,10 inches deep while using the 6" excelerator coil. Does the Minelab line get deeper targets than the MXT?

I don't believe so I'm pulling quarters at 10 and 12" with no problem with my MXT. Just yesterday I was introducing a friend to metal detecting and being a newbe with the MXT he pulled a dime at 8"s.

I think a lot depends on the experience of the operator and the modes used. I have both an MXT and a Minelab Quattro. In the past I hunted almost entirely in Relic Mode with the MXT and found the Quattro to be noticeably deeper on most targets. Within the past several months I have been hunting in Prospecting Mode on the MXT, listening for the "whisper" signals as my usual hunting grounds are getting pretty worked out. I run the SAT as high as I can within the stability of the ground mineralization, with discrimination at zero, ground locked and trigger forward. In this mode I find the depth comparable to the Quattro in All Metal Mode.

However, this may be because I'm much more familiar with the MXT and understand it's "language" better. I have learned to sniff out the deep really weak signals with the MXT, where the twittering and "flute music" of the Quattro undoubtedly causes me to miss a lot of good targets. It's probably just a matter of familiarity.

Just my observations.......

I can tell you with out question my MineLab SE gets deeper targets than my MXT! With that said, I have really started to take a liking to the MXT. The depth that a target is dug has a lot of variables. First of all you have to sift through all the posts that say they dug a dime at 12" which is more than likely 6" and maybe 8". You have to realize that people nearly always exaggerate the depth of a target either intentional or unintentional. The depth at which a target can be dug in my opinion comes strickly from experience and being familuar with your machine. If you do not have a lot of experence and are not familuar with your machine you obviouly are not going to dig a target as deep as someone that is very experenced and familuar with the detector. Once you have put a lot of time in you will know what to listen for on the deep targets and how to set your detector up depending on soil contions and etc. You can take the best machine with a newbie using it and an adverage detector with a 30 year veterian using it and he will get the deepest target every time. But I do feel like that Minelab is overall the deeper getting machine!

When I first read the caption on this post, I immediately had the thought, "Which Minelab versus which Whites and under what conditions?" There are many posts on the forums touting deep finds by minelabs and others as far as that goes. Personally, I take nearly all of those with several grains of salt. There may be the 12 - 14" dime find once in a great while, but certainly not on average. Depth figures, gas mileage, the size of the fish and the distance to the big buck taken in hunting season all seem to come with a pretty good fudge factor most of the time. Personally, I don't consider depth as important (as long as it's reasonable) if a machine doesn't have a quick, clean response, quick retune, good discrimination and good handling qualities. How deep do you really want to dig?

Last week I detected a place where I was able to set my gain at almost +2. I had my disc set between 1-2, (Relic mode). I didn't find any coins but I did dig up a piece of door hinge at almost 12" (measured). That is the deepest thing I have ever found with my MXT. I was using my 6x10 Eclipse. Most of my coins are also between 5"-7". Not trying to take this post in another direction but, I regularly find coins at 8"-10" with my Tesoro.

I have to agree with Marc, with my MXT and the 4.5 X 7 EXcelerator coil and hunting in the prospecting mode I can pull coins out at depths of 9" to 11" but you have to listen for real faint signals. What I don't understand is these people that say the rest of us are exaggerating. I have only been using the MXT for a little over a month now and I can honestly say I'm getting these deep signals. I hunted with the GMT for 5 years, did alot of gold prospecting, learned to listen for the faint signals. Some of ya need to get better coils or even better head phones because those depth are possible.:clapping::whites::please:

I have found that my 9.50 go's deeper. And work's good in light to moderate trash .But when the ground get's bad I'd use the 6-10.....HH........:thumbup:Hobby

I agree with what has been said on the posts for the most part. I have a X-Terra 70 and from what I have seen, it will go neck and neck with the Whites units depending on who is operating the detectors. The Minelab SE will go deeper than the 70, but has a steep learning curve. The one big advantage to the Minelab X-Terra 70 is the ease in learning and using the detector. The Whites machines take more time to get really good at using to their full potential. Both brands are excellent detectors. The Minelabs tend to be lighter in weight, which helps us old guys like myself swing the detector longer.
If there is a detector store or a detecting club near to you, maybe you can try the detectors and see what works the best for you. Either brand will have you making great finds.

Good hunting, John K
