I wanted to get the CTX but do i really need it if i own a V3i and a Etrac ? What can it do that the other can't besides water hunting ? The water hunting is for my AT's.

Tough question but......It all depends on what you want to do....or find. I own both and now a ctx as well. I hunt gold with the v3i and I hunt most everything else with the etrac. There are some things that a v3i will do that an etrac wont. I prefer etrac for most hunting. The reason I got the ctx is of course new technology and features but also to see if Im missing items because its being nulled out by iron/trash on the etrac. Some report better resulits with the etrac and some swear by the new features of the ctx. If you are happy with the etrac fine.....IF you want to push the envelope...as they say....get a ctx.

With its target trace feature, more than one target will show up on the screen even if you do not hear it. Although I do not own one of these machines, I love this very feature

Digger explains it quite well in this post:

I can see your dilemma and after some thinking on how I could help you out I've come up with this,
Just give me your E-trac and that would leave you a nice open slot for the CTX.
You can PM me for my mailing address. (I'll cover the shipping, how great is that?)

I wouldn't give up the Etrac. I do feel i am missing alot tho. I love the target trace feature also. I think there are alot of deep stuff waiting to get dug. I have the winter to think about it. Lol

The E Trac is getting the deep stuff. The CTX is no deeper. Maybe a little if you add that trash can lid coil. But you are missing masked targets. People that say they won't give up the E Trac usually give up the E Trac because it just ends up in the corner. The recovery speed and unmasking ability of the CTX make the E Trac an antiquated machine. Simple as that. People that use the E Trac with TTF think they are doing a good job in the iron. Well they are wrong. The E Trac is at best an OK machine in the iron. The AT Pro is much better. I have no idea how much you hunt or the kinds of sites you hunt. Unless you hunt in iron keep the E Trac. If you hunt old houses or old foundations loaded with nails the CTX is a great detector. Or option two is keep the E Trac and get a Deus. What the CTX does with it's target unmasking ability the Deus does with recovery speed and target separation. JMHO

To me it looks like feature to feature the same as the Infinium. Just in a different package and interface. The Infinium is a lot less money.

(CTX, ATX, AT Pro, MXT) It is getting hard to keep track of. I have made the same mistake myself numerous times.

Based upon my limited experience, I'd say Goodmore gave you good advice. You need a fast machine and you need a deep machine with one of them being waterproof to be an all around hunter of the precious...also, weight and balance play into the scenario...In my world, I have an F70 and an Atpro...both have paid for themselves many times over..I am intimidated by what appears to be complicated and expensive stuff...my Wife can vouch for that..she's both! If I was also hunting salt, maybe the CTX is the perfect machine? I dont know, but I'm trying to pay attention..

[size=large]As long as there's New and Improved we ALL think we're missing something. As the older and wiser of us have seen, or so I'm told, "There is no do all machine." some are better at things others are lousy at.
Seems there are those who can buy what ever, whenever they want to find out about a new machine while others need to really save and develop excuses or justify to themselves why they should buy that machine. still others are content to use the ones they have. I know one fella has had nothing but the Ace 250 for a long time. it was only a few months ago he asked me about the AT pro. I've invited him to try mine anytime before he buys.

Widebody has given the best advice, the newer machines offer very little more in real world terms.Over many years there has been little in the way of a "leap forward" concerning metal detecting technology, manufacturers just keep introducing more and more gimmicks to keep us interested. The problem is that a lot see gimmicks as "better performance" but in most cases this is not the reality.I've said this before......if the new technology such as the ctx was that good you would not see them for sale second hand would you.Stick with what you have Groundscanner, the ctx won't improve your finds rate.

I sold my CTX because I ran out of places to hunt. With these detecting shows everyone wants to detect their own property. I had an 1800.00 detector propped in the corner. Sure I would get a place every now and then, but I grew tired of the entire procedure.

Nothinhg beats location for finds. If you have a virgin site or yard done previously by a complete newbie you can find great stuff with any detector. No detector does it all. But of all the detectors out there the CTX comes the closest. It is much more than the E Trac with a target trace screen.

Is the CTX worth the money? That depends on how much you hunt and where you hunt. It boils down to about 7 to 800.00 more than an E Trac. It can take the place of two machines especially if you water hunt. Is it going to turn your old sites new? No! You can probably pick up a few coins or targets that are masked. Like I said in my earlier post it does a much better job in the iron. It is also a great machine for well manicured lawns. Because the target information gives you confidence that you are digging a hole for a good target.

If I had an E trac and a V3I I would Sell them and get the CTX. No way I would hold on to detectors that I don't use and watch their market value drop. But some like to own them all. I see some signatures with a list of detectors that make them look like KellyCo. If I wanted to explore some severe iron contaminated ground I would get a Deus and add it to my other detectors.

This is all my opinion and of course you will make up your own mind. Good luck on your future hunts.

At my stage in life it becomes more about what I want than what I need. I have two detectors. Sovereign GT for land and Excalibur II for the water. Had I bought the CTX first I would have been able to only buy only one detector. It took me quite a while to justify the purchase of the Excal. I had to dispose of some things that I had purchased many years ago (collectables) in order to make the purchase. Will it ever pay for itself. Possibly. Does it bring me pleasure to take it in the water and find things that are not available to those that do not water hunt. Certainly. Yet it becomes more about what I Want than what I need. If you Want the CTX strongly enough then go for it.

You don't need it to survive, but you need it to have a life and stay out of trouble. Not like your betting the horses or sitting in the tappie. Get the darn thing.
