Do I really need headphones?

mrdesignman

New member
I am very new to metal detecting and I just bought an ACE 250 with a sniper coil. I have only been out 3-4 times but I don't have any problem hearing the loud belltones. I have read numerous threads that mention how important headphones are, but none of them that I have read say why. Do I really need headphones? How do they help?

Thanks,

MrDesignman!

It doesn't matter on the ace machines.
In the ID mode, they only have three tones,
so super whiz bang hi-fi phones are a waste
of money. You can use most any headphones,
even cheapy versions. If you like the speaker,
you don't really need headphones at all.
I use a set, but only as "quiet" speakers
to reduce the volume. I don't actually wear
them. I just clip it to my arm cuff.
I saw some little FM radios at the dollar
store around the corner that included a
little set of headphones *with* an inline
volume control. And it had the right size
jack for the ace machines. That would make a
good lil cheapy headphone for a buck, and
even has a volume control. I might buy one
just to see how it would work... The radio
also includes a LED flashlight at the end...

They cut out outside noise, reduce battery consumption, and keeps the beeps to yourself which can be annoying to other individuals. Last but not least you can pick up audio variances to make you a better detectorist and perhaps not let that gold ring in the ground...

It comes down to personal preference.

There are times when I'm alone or I'm with my wife and we both want to listen and don't use phones.

I use them when other people are around, it cuts doewn the curiosity factor and gives more privacy.

The 250 has very loud audio and I haven't run int the need to wear them as a background noiseb locker.

Batteries seem to last longer using phones.

Probably the most important factor.... they look Kewl! LOL

#1 they keep outside noises out. #2 your batteries last twice as long. #3 It makes it easy to ignore pesky kids by pretending you can't hear them. :) #4 Easier to concentrate as your ears don't have to compete with all noises other than your detector. #5 Keeps your ears warm in chilly weather.
