Do I like my new 9" 3 kHz coil????

YES!!!!

I found the 7 Wheat's with dates ranging from 1919 to 1953. My silver coins consist of a 1938 Quarter, a 1929 Mercury Dime, and a 1953 Franklin half-dollar. All were found in under 2 1/2 hours of hunting. I also found a 1944 nickle, but forgot to get a pic of it. Interestingly enough, I found the Quarter, 1 wheat, the half-dollar, and the nickle in the same hole. Boy, was my heart was racing. This was my 1st outing with the 3 kHz, and it will be a permanent fixture on my X-Terra 70. I want to thank everyone, especially Randy, for letting us all know what a great coil this is. :please:

ps sorry for some of the pics, I cropped so I could load them for the 420 kb required for posting.

That's a pretty impressive first outing with the new coil! It sure seems to be living up to everyone's comments. Great job!!!

Mike

Thanks Mike. I really like it. The coins just ring out loud and clear with this coil. I'm still trying to hear it "Drop off on iron" like Randy talks about, but I'm sure that will come with more usage.

awesome finds, I just got my first franklin half dollar on saturday, what a cool feeling to dig that big silver! how deep were the coins? Do you think you were able to look onto the silver easier with this coil over the stock coil?

The coins were about 6" on average. The Mercury dime was closer to 8". I really feel like the 3 kHz gave me an advantage on silver over the stock coil. The silver just screamed at me when I went over it, and I knew what it was. This is the perfect coin shooter coil.

your making me want one! I am contemplating trading my 10.5 DD for one............I should have listened to advice given to me that said the DD was better in my normal soil in my area GB's at lower than 28 I think was the number, but I bought it anyways. I wish I had got the 3 kHz coil instead!

I have the 10.5 DD as well. I like it for relics, but would take the 3 kHz over it any single day for coin shooting. This is just after 1 hunt. I know you like coin shooting too. It may be worth the trade. With a little more practice, I think it will be deadly on silver.

I made a mistake in my post above, I meant to say the stock coil would be deeper in my soil because of how mild my soil is here.
Have you tested it on gold and nickels to see how it responds?

Same here. When I head for the old homesteads the 3KHz leads the way.

Beautiful finds silverman! I can appreciate them! Surprising how much old silver coins are sometimes worn so much being out of circulation for so many years in the ground. I found a mint shape 1948 quarter once with some mint shine luster still on it.

I do not own the 9" 3 kHz Concentric coil but I do want one as I was hunting 2 old homesteads lately with the stock coil and it would be better to have a 3 kHz for this. Yesterday I found a 1938, 1940, 1944, and 1946 pennies in an area I very carefully detected before and missed those pennies with my Garrett GTI 2500. IMHO the X-70 "IS" for sure deeper and I run at Sensitivity at max 30 with TID numbers up to +6 notched out. I put up with a little chatter to get more depth, if it gets too bad I back off the Sensitivety to about 27 to 28. Also I hunt in Tracking and turn it off when I get a good consistant signal through the broken signals. I cannot run in All-Metal as it would drive me crazy. There are so many signals to interpret.

The jury is still out if running in Tracking helps in dealing with high iron areas BUT I am trying this as I took advice from someone on this and trying this out as an experiment just now.

"IF" a 10.5" 3 kHz DD was made, would it be a better choice than the 9" 3 kHz Concentric for old homesteads, or not???? (But for now we have to use what is available and that is the 9" 3 kHz Concentric which is very good I hear. Also the 3 kHz will even pick up an old gold ring lost on an old homestead, for example reading at +8 and will not ignore it.) Thanks!

goes4ever,
The 1944 nickle I found gave me a loud reading with a strong 20 I.D at 6". I found the nickle in the same hold as the quarter, half-dollar, and a wheat. I thought I found everything, and then the nickle rang out with another coil sweep. It was the last coin in the hole. I air tested a newer nickle, and it was very weak. I also air tested my wife's ring, and it was very weak. With sensitivity at 26, it air tested at 3", and was a very weak signal with an ID of 4.
Thanks

Thanks David,
I wish you luck in your decision. Hopefully X-Terra will come out with even more coil options. I know I would purchase a 6" 3 kHz today if it were available. As far as the 10.5 3 kHz question, I'll let the pros handle that. I know from personal experience that the homesteads I hunt are littered with iron, and I prefer the coil be as small so it sees as few targets as possible in that situation.

Best of luck to both of you. If I can be of anymore assistance, please let me know.

I do like mine for sure. Just got back from a heavily hunted park and retrieved 21 coins, none of any age just digging some clad. It's all fun!

Congrats on the sweet silver finds!

I do have a question. Do your coins seem to be ID'n at different numbers from the stock coil? I like the fact that the 3KHZ has the same shape as the stock, Beale.

Hello Beale,
I just put put 4 coins in a test garden:

1. Silver dime solid 38 ID on both coils
2. Silver Quarter solid 42 on both coils
3. Wheat solid 36 on both coils
4. Half-dollar solid 44 on 3 kHz 44-46 on 7.5 kHz

Hope this helps

I do not have a 6" HF DD so I will try my small DD coils with my Musky Advantage soon. This is a good point and I will get out the Advantage(yes no loss in depth with the discriminator cranked up) on the iron littered homesteads also like you (silverman) said about small coils in this situation. Besides the 7.5" DD, I also have an Excellerator 5" DD for it that I have never used yet. Boy that might be good in those situations!!! I will try it on the homestead and keep you all posted.

No detecting today as it snowed and is cold, just very barely above freezing(about 35'F or 2'C now.) I would rather really love to live in a warmer-milder weather area like New Mexico or New Zealand. I do not care what anyone thinks, the north country sucks!! Yes sure the north is nice and beautiful, for a whole 4 months of the year, between LONG cold, snow, and rain! What a joke. I envy you in the southern areas. I love gardening and started tomato plants from seed indoors, in about January and some are about 4 feet high now and it is too cold to put them outside as they WOULD die from frost and cold yet as of May 12th now. In the south I would have a great LONG gardening and metal detecting season!!!

Good luck with those tomato plants. I've got blooms on half of mine, and will hopefully be eating my 1st one around July 4th. Yeah, the north is beautiful, but I hate col weather. I really like the 6" MF coil for X-Terra as well. They can be found pretty cheap sometimes. Hope it warms up for you soon.
