Do detectors lose their searching effectiveness over time?

I was wondering how does a detector lose its strength in searching or optimum effectiveness? Do Components just go out on day or do they slowly lose their factory original state? Just wondering 5-10 years from now if my Compadre will not have the strength to search as deep as it does new. Thanks

I have a 30 year old Tesoro Inca with the 8 inch coil that will air test a clad dime at 9 inches, it is my deepest Tesoro, I also have a 20 year old White's 5900 that is no slouch either.

Both examples look brand new, so that may be the answer, they were taken really good care of through the years and not left in the trunk of a car.

I agree, a lot of detector wear comes from improper handling and storage. Of course, there are also those few mds that might be bad apples from the start and are slowly losing effectiveness.

If you think your detector is getting a little weak, Just send it in to Tesoro. They will make it like new again for free. How can you beat that.. That life time warranty. Your detector will never wear out... KEN

Everything wears out and or degrades. Its the physical world we live in. As far as electronics go they usually either work or they don't. I would imagine they degrade very slowly. Heck, the radio in my car has been sitting in a hot car for 13 summers and still picks up stations like nobodies business. :) Use that Compadre for the next 10 years then give it to your nephew and get a new tector!!!!!

I dont think detectors do, but for sure some DETECTORISTS can lose their searching effectiveness over time!:rofl: Sure this is one healthy sport and all, but Man, a fellow has only so many good years on this Planet before something wears out...keeping up with the detectors capability with a persons own ability is a liability. :stretcher:

:cool: An electronics guy told me one time that electronic components like resistors and capacitors will "dry out" over time. That's why they always tell you , "Store in a cool dry environment".
:detecting::tesoro:

Its mostly the batteries that loose their effectiness over time and need replacing. And that affects the detector.

Tell a very short story about an early Golden I had that the tones started losing their place....I'm getting bummed thinking the detector is going bad. But a new battery cleared the issue right up and the tones went back to there proper places. Bad news was I had tuned it up with the weak battery and had to retune it again with a good battery. Learned a lesson. When the tones move out of their places, change the battery first. :rolleyes:
