Diy excal coils?

Active member
Have people made their own coils for the excal?
Are there different types available - concentric, DD, other?

Only one coil now that comes standard for the Xcal....... the 10" slimline. HOWEVER, they can be modified with ANY coil that fits the Sov........ and there are a lot of after market chooses there.

I myself prefer the sef coils. I have a 12x10 on one of mine and I swear it detects deeper then the stock 10" on my Excal 2. Mine runs very smooth and quiet when set just right. I've never heard of anyone making one from scratch. Coils for the Sovereign are still available. I hope it never comes to us having to make our own. My CTX will get a lot more beach use if it comes to that.

I know here are Sov coils that will work but why just these - what is it that limits choice to just them?
A different type coil design might open up a lot of new excal possibilities.

Its because the Sov and Excals were the first ML multi freq machines and used BBS. Others now use FBS. Big change in channels and sampling periods.

Bottom line is ......... the time that I would spend researching, building, testing, adjusting..... redoing, testing .........

And as slow as I am that would take a few years.....

Where I could be on the beach saving all of the treasures that would have got away while making one.

My theory is, How deep a coil goes is limited by the power output of the machine.

Where the focus should be is putting more power to the coil from the board.

Gotta go, the beach is calling my name!..:detecting:

I agree Joe.... way to many options on cheap used ones that you know WORK. Joe even if you got the depth..... we still dont have the ability in disc to properly ID targets. So many would id as iron.

I have a good 10" coil I took off an Excal 1000 if anybody needs it. Nothing wrong with it at all. Cable's good. I did put a Sovereign connector on it. If anybody here needs it let me know.

I understand the concept of if it works don't fix it but In my first tests of my junker excal I found the detect pattern of the 10" coil something to get used to and wonder if a different coil might be an improvement. But no one is saying they tried Anything... really?

I think there's just to many really good coils available. I for one and very happy with both options I have. I dig plenty deep, for the smallest targets. I think the BBS technology would make it very difficult for the diy type.

You think you might have a bad coil on yours?

I have two - both rejects that I got cheap. Cracks in the bottom and worn tangs.
But they do work - I just don't know how well yet.
I had intended to make my own coils for some pulse detectors I built so I was considering the excal also. Weird that not many have treid as tons of people make their own coils for diy detectors on Geotech1.com.

I'm not that tech savvy to be able to build a coil from scratch myself. Do you think the BBS tech is a hinderence? Gotta be a reason nobody's done it.

I believe that the BBS coils have an amplifier in the coil that amplifies the signal before it is sent to the machine. If so that amplifier might be very difficult to obtain

This has been back quite a few years as he tried to make some and they did work, may be not as well as the stock coil but took a lot of money for the equipment and a lot of trial and error to get them to work at all plus for the BBS machines I believe there is a circuit board in the coil I believe, but not for sure. There is quite a few different coils out there that will fit on the BBS machines, Sun Ray made a nice 8 and 12 inch coil and Kellyco sold many different coils too and I pick up a new one on the auction site that I havent even used yet and still in the box and may sell as it is a 14 inch as all I need is my 8 and 10 inch coil on my GT.
On the Excalibur I was told by beach hunter that the big coils work good, but in the water they are very hard to swing. so if you are a water hunter I wouldn't get too big of a coil.

Rick

Rick.... the problem is people water hunting has gotten used to the way their machine swings and most swing to fast any way with a very wide coverage on the longer straight shfts. Larger coils cant be PUSHED, you have to move with the current and if fact do much better at a slower pace. You still cover SO much more sand. Some dont like um because out there PP can be a bear as well as when you get tired...... you can step on them.
