For those folks suggesting a Diving Knife

Hmmm, spent all day trying to find a Hori Hori knife, without ordering online... and instead found this..., picked up the Malco Duct Knife today... "seems" pretty rugged... its is "sharp" and cuts from both sides. This is the one:

http://www.drillspot.com/products/455961/Malco_DK6S_Duct_Knife

Blade is about 6 inches... I havent tried it out yet... but called police and asked about using this, as I described it to the officer on the phone... told him it had a 6 inch blade etc... he said that cops would see what I am using it for and no one would bother me about it... I asked specifically if I used it in a park etc... he laughed and said it would be fine. Although I think that the legal blade length here in Phoenix is 4 inches... He said again, not to worry, they would see me Md'ing and not be bothered.

Now, having bought this... not so sure I want to try it as the "legal" blade length is 4 inches. What would ya'll do?

Seems to be perfect for the hunting I do, parks and school yards... (not so sure I would bring in a school yard... which was another interesting point the officer made... he said school yards at night, were off limits - period. I asked "even if not posted and gates are open etc", he said, yup, if he were to see me oout there... he would ask me to leave etc... and that I would be eligible for arrest as a trespasser???? Public school. Interesting. Now, having said that, I have Md'd school yards at night, plenty of time... even had a patrol car light me up once, saw me etc... turned off the light and ignored me.

I dunno... am confused... should I use this as my digger or what??? He insisted no big deal... use it.

I think you will be fine with that. I use a 10" bayonet and police dont bother me. I order knives and things from here. They have good prices and quick delivery..

Go to a military surplus store, and get a bayonnette. It's got to be the real kind (military spec/quality), and not the harbor freight pot-metal cheapies. Some of them are sharpened only @ the bottom half of the blade. If so, put it on a grinder wheel, to sharpen it all the way to the shank. And if it's only got a blade on one side, you can use a bench grinder also to make a blade on the opposite side too.

What ever knife you decide on, don't buy it on line. Pick it out at a store when you can examine it and feel the heft before you buy. You don't want to end up with an out of balance piece of crap that you are ready to chuck in the bushes before your first hunt is over.

Ok, went out this morning and tried the new knife (The Malco Duct Knife... picked it up from home depot)... worked pretty good this morning in a park. Also, Drum Roll...

Broke my No-Gold Streak!!! Yup - happy dance, in the middle of the park! About 2 inches under... 14k White Gold! About time!

Ok, back to the knife... so far, after one outing... this one suits me pretty well, sharp and seemed to hold up to the pressure when I pried pretty well. Time will tell, but so far, am pretty happy with this knife for digging. Much better on the hands.

Only $6.99each if you buy 4.
Good enough for metal detecting without spending an arm and a leg.

This Blue Diver's Hunting Knife The overall knife size is 11" and features a 7" blade. The blade of this knife is constructed from stainless steel with a blue handle and guard. Set also includes a cloth sheath.

If the blades too long for you, grind it down to desired shape and size.

Howdy Sven that knife also looks "Perfect" for the type I had been looking for. Nice! If the Malco Duct knife should fail etc... I'll probably check into that one next. Had been thinking about the Lesche too, but seems big again for what I am looking for. Thanks for the info... that looks good.

Also, thanks to everyone else, as always, some great advice, really appreciate it.

To each his own, but I would not use this as a MDing knife. This is an obvious Jack-the-slasher hunting knife.

I was hunting around for a new knife myself as my favorite one broke last year.
Shouldn't have been hunting with it in that hard dry soil anyways.....

Came up with a blade that would suit my needs, wish the blade was 1/2" longer.
If your handy, it would be easy to make a handle for this blade. If I end up getting one, will
make

Worth a look----

if you go to lowes and look at their duct board knives in the hvac section you might find what you need..i have been using one for a while and it does the job well.one side is smooth and sharp and the other is serrated and sharp.they run about 15 bucks.the blade is thinner than the lesche and it cuts grass better but is still stiff enough to pry a plug out..mine is a klenk brand that comes with a sheath.it has good temper.it has to to cut insulation.
