dissing the automax pinpointer

formon

New member
everyone is dissing the automax pinpointer,. is there anything positive about it ? i just oder on yesterday did i make a bad choice

I haven't seen or used one but have heard that they're not very deep and require manual tuning everytime you turn it on. There are some mods you can do that supposedly will increase the depth. Think there's a video of one in YouTube.

Well, it's kind of like a lot of us have bought different electronic pinpointers, looking for a bargain, only to find out that you get what you pay for. The cheap ones break easily. There are also other "bargain" pinpointers out there which would get the same grilling from others as the one you have on order. :) Not to worry. when yours wears out or breaks, you know which one to replace it with. :)

You get what you pay for. They do work, but will most likely fail very soon. If they were any good, they wouldn't be bundled with a new detector by one dealer. You were advised yesterday to go for the Propointer, you should have listened. Maybe you had already ordered it, maybe you can cancel the order, I would.

The question should have been ask on the metal detecting forum. The v4 does work, and will get the job done, however it doesn't get the depth of some other pinpointers on the market. If you can't afford to go buy a higher end model, use the v4 for a while and save your clad and work up to a better one. Now if you spent much more than $40 for I would cancel your order and look at other options.

On the positive side, it's LONG. I got one and use it as a loner when someone hunting with me dosen't have one. Suggestion. Get some J D WELD and put it where the shaft comes into the box for strength. It has a way of breaking at that point. Can't beat the Garrett Pro Pointer tho.

Even if you would have asked your question about the v4 on the metal detecting forum, I would bet my propointer that at least 75% of the responders would have told you to go with the propointer.:yo: just my opinion

I used one for a few years, and it got me hooked on using a pin pointer. But once I got my Pro-Pointer I was stunned with the difference. I still have the A-M, and let people I take out use it, but I won't use it unless I somehow run over my Garrett with my truck.

but why question would be. Why ask for advise and then dismiss it? I have use the one you bought and it will work, but it sure isn't a propointer.
Good luck..

On the positive side, I seem to get one every time I buy a detector. My first step is to post it on Ebay as they sell very well to the bargain hunters. I sell them new in an unopened box.

I actually like mine... I've had it five years and no problems. And it does what I want it to do
as far as pinpointing.
Can't complain really, considering I only paid $40 for it when I bought the 250.
The only drawback to it that I see, is that it's fairly bulky, and you don't want to
stress it out. It looks like the plastic case could break fairly easy if you sat on it,
tried to dig with the probe end, dropped it on cement, etc.. :(
So needless to say, I don't abuse it. But overall, it's really not too bad a pinpointer.
I've never had any issues with the performance, and I actually prefer manually setting
the sensitivity vs automatic. I don't have to guess as to what it's doing.

I have never owned one, but have 2 friends that had them...BOTH ended up in pieces over time...It is too flimsy, too big, and just asking to be snapped in half...The manual tuning can be a pain (I know...I own a BH Pinpointer as backup to my Garrett)...
It pays to pay more....

HH,

I don't know about all of that. I think it depends on how u hunt and if u clean and take care of ur pointer. I have had a pointer I got at harbor frieght I bought for 15 bucks and I love it....it wirks great. I clean it tho after using everytime and I keep it in the case no no dirt egts in it. I think it all comes down to how u take care of it. If u don't have the funds...get the one from harbor freight and tape two pennies on it about half way up. U have to gage that. Will give u more depth. Happy hunting
