Discrimintaion - checked or unchecked

On my SE I have everything checked except crown caps & nails which I have X'd off.

From reading the manual that means I want the machine to look for the things I have checked and block out (discriminate) the things I have X'd off.

Now what is puzzling me is when we want AM mode we clear it so it accepts everything.

What would be the difference between clearing everything except X'ing crown caps & nails as opposed to the way I do it. Is it the same thing or is this way I just mentioned give you more "juice"?

If your screen looks exactly the same, with the exact areas blacked out, it doesn't matter what combination of the accept and reject functions you use. For instance, if you use the edit feature and duplicate a certain level of iron mask, both methods will have the same results. Now if you use 2 different methods of blacking out the screen and different areas are affected, that is not the same areas blacked out, of course there will be a difference in the way the detector reacts while detecting.

Thanks. I think that covers my question.

But yes he is correct...so why not just select clear and then X-out nails and Cr. caps....either one is a no brainer to listen to or see from curser location....but if you are spending a lot of time doing more looking than digging then go ahead and disc. them out...but I think if thats all that is a problem and not tons of tabs and pullrings.....then just go all metal.

If I disc. out anything..I find myself doing a lot of looking....cause it makes chirps and doesn't null it out completely....but if you are not experienced enough to listen to all metal...by all means....disc. out what you feel is a hinder...till you get more tone cohearent to the machine....why get frustrated......cause you have a great machine....just don't get discuraged and give up on it....it is the best thing in your arsennal...I remember asking the same questions when I first got the XS....

Why not try and set it up several ways and try it on targets you find and see what works best. I was told that I needed to check things I was looking for because the detector gets confused otherwise and I dont find thats true at all. So next time you go hunting and you get one of those nice deep signals why not just try a different setting and see how your detector responds to it. great way to learn.

I put forth this very same question when I first got my SE.

I think the way I phrased it was: What is the difference between, say, just selecting coins (check mark) and leaving the other target types blank (neither an X or check mark), vs X'ing or checking the other target categories?

We all know that just putting a check mark by coins, will allow pull tabs to sound off, and nails to be rejected, as they fall in their respective white or blacked out section of the screen. Why then, would you need to also put a check mark by pull tabs and an X by nails ?

The answer I got from Sandy, who used to work at Minelab was that I should check all targets I want to accept and X all targets I want to reject, as opposed to leaving anything blank. She said the reason for doing so was that the machine 'recovers' more quickly to the threshold if a category has either the X or check mark selected.

I took that to mean that if I left pulltabs blank, the detector would still pick it up, but not return to threshold as quickly as it would have if I had put a check mark there. So, I've been doing it that way ever since, except when I hunt in iron mask, all metal. Still, I've always wondered about how the machine is performing and processing a blank 'accept' vs a checked 'accept'. I wish there was a way to test those conditions and see if the machine truly performs differently.

Anyone else have a thought on this? A little technical input from Minelab would be appreciated on this question!

Knipper look at my post below this one, same thread. I was told the same thing by Sandy but I had to check it out for myself and I did and I dont find any difference at all whether something is checked or left blank. Its simple to do, next time your hunting make it a "hunting classroom" and try different settings on your targets and you will see for yourself if it works. One thing your should quickly find out is that to much iron mask or disc can cause you to miss targets.
