Tim,
Unfortunately, the MXT, while it is a great machine, is lacking when it comes to audio discrimination since it only has two tones, and really has no VDI discrimination. You basically discriminate out the sound altogether in most cases where a multi-tone detector will give you several different tones to help in discriminating. This might help some. If you like the audio discrimination, you might consider hunting coins in the relic mode. This way everything above your descrimination setting hits with a higher pitch. You will then know that all the low tone signals should be below your descrimination setting. The other thing that helps is make sure you have a repeatable signal before bothering looking at the VDI. You will pull your hair out trying to hunt using the VDI. The VDI is constantly reacting to whatever happens to be in the ground and is almost always changing. You will see a lot of good numbers that really aren't there on the VDI during subsequent sweeps. The discrimination really doesn't discriminate out the VDI, just the sound. Just keep listening for that repeatable signal. Once you have a repeatable signal, then check the VDI to get the extra information to decide whether to dig or not. Hope this helps. HH.
