Discrimination and depth ? on 1236-x2

Osage

New member
It appears that this unit loses disc. ability at depth. I can disc. out a pull tab or nickel for example at 5" but not at say 7". Air test I have done confirm this. I can however use the SILENCER switch and apparently achieve disc. capability at distance in the air test.

I was unaware that the 1200 series had this limitation. It can be a little frustrating in an area where you have many deep pull tabs that sound like good targets because the disc. only works to a certain depth.

I wonder if the SILENCER could be used to help identify targets that the disc. is not working with because they are deeper than it's capability.

I know it sounds weird but the SILENCER seems to not allow the unwanted item to sound like a good target at depth when it is on.

My air test did not show depth loss when using the SILENCER.

Any advice??

I HAVE USED THE 1200 SERIES FISHER FOR MANY YEARS AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM LIKE THAT WITH ANY OF THEM. I HAVE HUNTED WITH THE 1220, 1260, 1265, AND STILL HAVE A 1266 AND NORMALLY RUN THE DUAL DISC AT ABOUT FOIL ON DISC 1 AND DEPENDING ON THE SITE, DISC 2 IS ABOUT WHERE PULLTABS JUST BREAK UP. I HAVE FOUND A TON OF COINS WITH THESE MACHINES OVER THE YEARS. THE 1236 IS ONE I HAVEN'T OWNED OR USED SO MAYBE SOMEONE WITH EXPERIENCE WITH THE 1236 CAN ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS BETTER THAN I CAN. I DID NOTICE ON MY OTHER MACHINES A PULLTAB WITH THE TAIL MISSING WAS HARD TO DISC OUT WHEN IT WAS DEEP. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR 1236....IT SHOULD BE A GREAT DETECTOR WITH VERY GOOD DEPTH CAPABILITIES............ROGER

My 1236X2 never had that problem. However,I had a 1266X that did the exact same thing and found it very frustrating. My guess there's something wrong with your detector.

I talked to my dealer today. His responce was that the 1236 did indeed have more depth than discrimination ability with the silencer off. The silencer on tightens the discrimination but you will lose as much as two in. in depth. He said that the 1236 allows one to make the choise to use or not. Other units have the silencer with out the option to use or not. He did say the 1266 had this problem of more depth than disc. I ask if a differant mid-line detector was available that would have disc. capability at max. depth. He said I would lose some depth because the target ID. function and silencer caused depth depreciation. He said that early ID. machines had this problem of correctly identifing targets at depth so engineers had to decrease depth by tightening disc. for better ID. ability at depth.

He gave me the # of the Fisher rep. and said that the rep. would be able to answer my questions better. My dealer was very nice and trying to be helpfull. I won't be able to talk to the rep. untill next week.

T. Dankowsky said on his site that it was not my imagination about the disc. ability being less than the depth ability on the 1236.

Ron, did you replace the 1266 or deal with the frustration ?

Joe,

Spoke to a Fisher rep. It appears that the 1265 and the early 1266s were set up the way I desribed my 1236. Some 1236-x2 were also set up that way.
I can send it in and they will adjust the disc. for me. He cautioned though that I may lose some depth.

I will take my unit out for some more test this weekend and decide what I will do. Part of the problem could be user based of cource. I know one thing this unit sure gets some depth set as is.

Oh Well! Thanks for your input,

One I have used recently that displays the same characteristic is the Tesoro Cibola. To me it seemed even more pronounced with the Tesoro. Mid depth items disc out at a higher setting and when deeper the target sound changes and begins to sound like a partially disced out trash target with the Cibola. At least with the 1236 you get those soft whisper signals on the deeper stuff.

Tom

Osage, that was one of the reasons I got rid of the 1266X.The1236 had great depth never had that problem in regular mode, didn't use the silencer mode that much.I always was maxed the sensitivity to hear a threshold sound,I still don't' think its working right.
