Discrimination and deep target

treebeard

New member
Hello,

Today, I decided to make a depth test in a field :

I dug a 8,6" hole in which I put a litlle cobber coin (~2,3" diameter), sensitivity 30, Deep On/Fast On, Gain level 11. I tried in the first time to use the original's Minelab coin pattern by swinging slowly on the top of the hole, I did have a correct response to the target but it's seemed to be difficult to catch this sound if i swing and walk as I do everytime.

So I tried to walk in the direction of the hole, swinging slowly and... nothing! The ET didn't catch the target when I was walking.

I decided in a second time to use an almost wide-open Quickmask pattern (I've just edited the edges to null the ferrous) : my first impression was that the sound at the top of the hole was stronger, so I decided to walk and swing with my ET, and with this kind of pattern, the ET caught the target easily, with a clear and noisy sound as we all like it.

My question is : should I favor a good discrimination and deal with a depth loss or should I favor a good depth ability and deal with the idea of digging oftenly on trash targets.

Edit: If i have put a 15" SEF coil, do you think I would catch this target with the coin pattern?
Thx

Depends on the area your hunting in mostly I would say. I do know that if you swing the Etrac slightly faster it will hit better it don't have to be swung as slow as the Explorers are. If it was trashy I would opt fot the higher discrimination and as you clean it out some then you can open up the screen more or possiably go try Two Tone Ferrous (TTF) with a wide open quick mask for the deeper keepers. Bigger coils don't necessisarily maen you will hit it as they see more objects and process more soil I find just the opposite that when I go down to a Sunray 8" coil it sees better into trashy ground.

Etrac don't really lose depth with more discrimination like most other detectors do.

Saw a video on here of a guy in Australia (MARKMAN7) who suggested to go to LONG in sounds and he shows in his videos how in normal sound in trash he barely gets a blip of a good target hit but in LONG it screamed out from among the other target signals so you hear it. I'm going to have to try that out. Someone also suggested SMOOTH too to try.

ALSO remember the minelab detectors don't like disturbed ground so a freshly burried coin won't work like a long burried one even if it's been a couple of years in someone's test garden it's still not the same as lots of years in the ground.

I'm really sorry I failed the conversion , I was talking about 0,78" of diameter, and it's an old copper coin (Double-tournois, Louis XIII, 1634) that I found a few days ago during a hunt in a field.

By the way, thx EtracTom-AdirondacksNY, I'll try to answer you as soon as possible.

Well, I've tried today to use both the Long and Smooth response, and yeah, it rocks! a very strong sound even walking!! it's was a great tip! Thank you so much!

seems to me that long makes it harder to PP using the wiggle method,,,, that's just me

i usually prefer to use a 1/3 open screen and let my mind be the secondary discriminator.....my pattern is simple, everything with an FE 27 or under, i want to hear. but, it depends on the site!! im used to the flood, the cascade, of auditory information now....

yes I seem to be able to understand much better while all three of my girls AND my wife talk at the same time. Before the ET I was unable too ,,,heheheheh

Treebeard you located in France and for you using discrimination is bad and not very clever, because you can miss allot interesting targets, Go to TTf, respond Long and manual sensitivity and look for good old spots. dig iron and look what is it. are you from France south?

NebTrac

Treebeard I see in your first post you have fast on that will clip the sound and makes it way shorter so try turning that off unless your in a very, very trashy spot as the Etrac and the pro coil is good at seperation as it is unless it's very, very trashy.

Go back to sounds normal and try that out and see if with fast off if that makes a difference for you or not hitting that coin.

If not then you found a good combination for you with fast on and deep on and sounds either long or smooth then like someone else said open up your screen too.
