Discriminate and Silver uMax

bipListener

New member
Hi there;

I owned one silver umax, about couple years , and like all others I'm proud about it's best relation price / functionality;

My question now is because I'm wondering to purchase the new 3 coils out-law;

Question :

Does the discrimination features ( or circuit ) from both detectors are different ?

Of course , Ground Balancing switch function helps discriminate circuit' accuracy, but reading some where I see that silver uMax has ground balancing too; he just do not have its button;

Does both circuits are different ? out-Law is better ? I guess !

Do I get better discriminate performance in Dirty sites ?

Advanced Thanks !!

The Silver does not have a true all-metal mode.
The Silver all metal mode is nothing more than still being in discriminate mode but accepting targets into the lower iron range.
As you know, the higher you turn the disc, you lose some depth. So by dropping down into the lower disc range by toggling to all-metal,
you get a slight increase in depth. So if you didn't know about this being in disc mode, you may have thought you have an actual
VLF threshold based all metal mode like the Outlaw, Vaq, Tejon, you don't. The Silver is nothing more than a detector in constant
disc. mode. It's still an entry level machine with min. of features.

From what I read, 53Silver's Outlaw could still get quarters but could disc out a dime.
I have never heard of this ability on any other Tesoro units, my Vaq or Compadre can't do it.
I can see where this extra range of disc in the high end could have great use in figuring out pop tops, big aluminum and who know what else.
Might even make the pop top issue more easier to deal with even when using DD coils.

I believe the Outlaw is a great detector but I really don't see the value of discriminating a dime from a quarter. Maybe that ability to widen or separate the discrimination range reaches into other areas but has not been reported yet. But for me If its above copper or dime I'm definitly going to retrieve it.

That is new to me, Now I realize the part from user manual , that explains the low level discriminate (iron) is equal to it's pseudo "all metal mode" !

The value?
Pop tops and large cans.
Not really a problem with the concentric coil, but it could speed up things a bit.
The DD coil might benefit from this most of all.

So far no one has addressed the ground balance issue in the original post. The Silver umax does NOT HAVE a convenient ground balancing capability. It is factory pre-set and only accessible on a small pot after removing the face plate. In difficult ground, the adjustable, manual ground on the Outlaw will outperform the Silver easily if set properly.

...I mainly hunt freshwater beach's now & I use the silver when they drained the Lake for flood control in the fall....& that is where the Ga Red Dirt is also there is 6 to 8 inches of sand on the Beach over the red clay & I can pull coins & pulltabs out that have made it all the way down to the red stuff....that all being said the Silver works great in these Mineralized conditions.....& I set the Disc at IRON.....hope this helps...HH...Tab.

Yeah, I have so many good finds that for me silver Umax does very well his job; As tab hunter said , in wet places it really amazing;

So I'm looking for a good discriminate unit , I'm a big tesoro fan, and In the same price rang we have for relics hunting;

Delenon, Tejon, Vaquero and out-law;

I've saw in some other thread in this forum (where i do not know any more) , that out-law and vaquero has quite the same circuit ( and does its job very well )

Deleon maybe a option too. because of it's display (mainly ID information ) could bring more clues and maybe in a later time I will be able to distinguish good targets more easily;

Relics are my focus, here where I live we do not have salt water, and sand soil predominates, some times it is very ( and I say veryyyyy ) dirty ,

may be someone could drive me to a better choice;

Forwards Thanks; to every one !
