Discovery 3300 internal 100k pot went bad-moved it to be adjustable externally

First off I don't reccomend pulling one of these apart if its not broken & your factory warranty is intact. And mine should have been covered but I made the mistake of adding silicon to the edge of the faceplate-thinking that & an O ring setup on the GB adjustor would prevent moisture from getting in. They balked & I didn't want to argue. Also I like being the master of my tools-and how they operate etc...

I have added GB adjustors to my fixed GB Tesoro's so I had a small clue about getting inside & making changes. But this model has no source for teardown instructions or anything other than cryptic clues about hidden screws. I tried heat before anything & the faceplate film started warping at the gitgo so I went for a more direct method(danger Will Robinson!).

Using my fingers I found the screw recesses. I dremeled out a hole through the membrane on the rh screwhole. Dead center & I found the head of the philips screw. Then I went to do the other side. Luckilly I had good lighting & quickly realized I was about to dremel through the membrane film wiring-a deadly error. I realized the only way to get under it was to lift the faceplate off using small tools to lift it at the edges & then pull it off carefully. I now had to wiggle the facelpate and get the upper tabs dislodged. After a few trial & error adjustments tracking down my issue I ended up removing the LH screw & using the one screw I can acces w/o taking of the pushbutton membrane. Stays secure no problems.

Another thing I can't stress enough is to mark any adjustors before you touch them. I found the small 100K (lower rt 3rd pic)pot very touchy & almost impossible to get a correct setting. But when I did get it right the machine worked very well. So I wanted a multi tyurn adjustor right?. Except radio shack didn't have one & I bought a standard 100k pot that I could mount on the outside.

It's amazing how many ways you can get a 3 prong wiring wrong but I finally got it right. And lo & behold-the potentiometer I removed was defective & unable to adjust smoothly at all.All of a sudden it was working better than ever, very stable in no-motion all metal but still capable of nailing a 8" quarter in my test garden-with a 7" coil. My deepest coin was a zincoln @ 9" with a good all metal signal & the typical variable ID. Today I picked up a possible gold linked fob(Its in the whatzits forum) in a hole with many many nails. I have also gotten a metal bead from something at 3"-it was smaller than a .177 pellet yet gave a repeatable signal. So yeah its working well.

Now here's the strange part-I have no idea what this adjustor actually does-I just know it needs to be adjusted accurately for this machine to shine. Also I can "back off" the setting & it gets less sensitive to foils etc. But I like it hot-I got 9 nickles today as well and thats with a very low coin count.
