discovery 2200

I was given a BH2200 with no manual. I have no gold item to compare tone detection for gold. However, I have a box of talcum fine gold metalflake which is at least 50 years old from the now defunct Gibson guitar company in Kalamazoo, MI.
When I pass it over this, I get the lowest tone at iron. Is this a reading for bronze or a mix of gold and bronze or tuna fish or what? The gold metalflake is very resistant to tarnish and smearing a bit on my finger and letting it sit there does not produce tarnish, either. It remains a bright gold color. Any help would be appreciated.

Gold can ring in anywhere from iron/foil to zinc...low and tones mostly...I am surprised the detector picks up on the fine gold at all, unles you have a LOT of it...make sure it is in a plastic container, or some non-metalic box...
BTW...Ask some friends if you can test their wedding bands and such...Most folks are fascinated to see your detector in action...

HH,

All that glitters is not gold.

Powdered gold would be very expensive as a paint color, not to say it is not used. It is used on lots of pricey items. Fine porcelain and some posh furniture are 2 examples.

Last summer I found on a beach I was swinging and found some streaks of weathered mica flakes, muscovite mica that had a very high luster and was slightly yellow. At a quick glance I was startled and thought it looked a lot like gold. It did nothing on my detector but there was a bunch of it and I brought home a few ounces to tease my friends. It still looks just as golden 6 months later.

You might get some small cheap gold item (links of chain or the like) at a pawn shop or coin dealer, I got a couple of grams last summer to play with.

I believe that only the coil is waterproof. The rest of the detector is not and if even a small amount of water gets in the main housing it can seriously damage the unit.

Thank you for replying so quick, have you used yours in the water, have you had any luck yet as I have not yet bought the unit and would like to know if you have made any good finds with it? Thanks Vince

I was running an F-75 when I found my 2200 at a garage sale for $35.00. For that kind of money it was worth trying even though (at the time I was certain) BH only made kids machines. I used my 2200 all over the state of Oregon and it did well, except at the beach. Salt water caused such a high level of falsing that it would have been easier to just turn the md off and guess where coins were buried rather than dig all the false signals. That said the 2200 was dollar for dollar the fastest and best coin shooting machine I have ever had the pleasure of using. I thought it was little more than a childs toy when I bought it, but that changed as I learned the machine. It paid for itself within 90 days and my TR in sbout a year. The TR has since paid for my Outback. I now take great pleasure in the disgusted looks I get from guys running those 'adult grade' detectors as I pull my muddy ole TR outta my Jeep with it's badge on the side. I immediately fall to the area they have swept and start plucking the coins they skipped (missed?). After a few minutes the reaction is always the same. Either they become angry and leave or they come over to talk about my TR. Most are surprised when I offer to let them sweep the rest of the stretch with my machine. Most also find coins they missed. All of them are shocked when I hit the same area with the 2200 and she still finds a coin. The 2200 has never let me down. What about the beach? you say? Honestly how much do you expect from a $35.00 garage sale, kids detector (GRIN)
