Disaster! My Excalibur headphones are broken:(

Hi guys, wader mike and I had a hard time in Cornwall, with high tides, land-slides, closed roads and no finds! The only thing I found was a "kong' dog toy, which my dog was very happy about:- but is made of rubber, eyes only saved the hunt, they cost $15 new.

Then my headphones went quiet, after I got back home, I checked it out, the curly cable has pulled out of the bottom of the head phone! I do remember dropping the detector, and the headphone cable saving it, so it was my fault, and not faulty machinery. Does anyone know if I can fix this, or do I have to send it back to minelab?
How do the headphones come apart? There are 4 wires in the curly cable. Thanks for any help, here's a picture of the "kong" and my dog after we played with it :)

Should be a simple fix for anyone that has a soldering iron...go to the "Modifications" forum, there you will find all sorts of pictures of headphones in various stages of being modified, you can see how they come apart easily...the latest is a post on Mar 10 by Oldbeechnut, complete with pictures of how a headset comes apart...hope this helps you get your hearing back and on the hunt!

Yeah he takes out.the other end of the cable on that video. I need to know how to pop the headphones open. Oldbeachnut is so cool. I wish I had good skills like that. Wadermike just came down to do a bit of detecting for a few days, and he taught me to pan for gold!

You can probably "rig" it to be water resistent enough for wading, but to fix it correctly would be extremely difficult. If the damage was at the detector end it would be rather simple as you could just shorten the cable and reattach it to the board. You actually broke the wires off and free from the speakers which are set in a flexible silicone base inside of the muffs. You could pull them apart and maybe solder the connection back together, but it won't be waterproof, and will most likely fail easily.

My suggestion would be to either send it in to Minelab for new phones, or find a used set and install them yourself. There are a number of people here that have upgraded from the stock Koss phones and sold them here.

Thank WW I'm just like you guys, being a pirate....and enjoying ever second...

You can open them up on the bottom with a sharp screw driver where the blue and grey meet. As you will see you will need to cut into white silicon as far as possible, solder up all according to colors, then tie wraping the cable to the white plate to keep it in place..., then resilicon...should last you for a while...if you need more strait cable to do the job, the coiled cable will go strait if you heat it with a heat gun and pull it strait until it cools....the white plate on the red headphones are the same as the old blues but with clear silicon, this will give you a idea on how far you can cut into with out hitting the piezo bender....most important, tie wrap the cable to the white plastic plate, this will hold her in place then the silicon will seal here in good. I use 3m here but get the best you can, as you can see saltwater is a killer..Maybe you want think about a set of skullies come this fall, let me know they come endcap to headphone. easy to install...
Skullies, I make 10 sets a year, at a very fair price..............Another option is GGUWs will be coming out with the same around May, .endcap to HP's, and they are improve....

Thanks guys for your advice. You are so knowledgeable Oldbeechnut, thanks for sharing it with me. I would love o buy some skullies, have you got any to sell? How do I go about buying them? Do you know how long they would take to get to the uk? Thanks again, I'll try and fix 'em for now, hopefully I can make it last until I can buy some new ones.... WW
