Disappointing First Day Hunt In Idaho

New member
I traveled from Arizona to Idaho to visit family this week. There is a park across the street from my daughters house that once had a K to 12th grade school from the early 1900's. I was really looking forward to some good finds. They made the park beautiful, re sod ed the entire area. It's been there for quite a while. It was really free from trash. There were many good solid rock steady, repeatable silver signals, but they were all so deep that I could not get to them without tearing up the lawn. I'd cut out a plug and dug down to about 8 to 10 inches. The signals only got better. With the digging tool I had, I could not go deeper without really making a big hole. I felt it was better to stop then make a mess of a really beautiful park. If I could have gone down deeper, I know I would have had some darn good finds. As much as it hurt not to recover any old silver, I felt it was better to be responsible then greedy. I only wish I could have searched the area before they did the work on it. I searched the volleyball court sand and not one signal was had. I still have some nice old areas to detect. Wish me luck.

Good hunting, John K

I know what you mean, the destruction of beauty isn't worth the price. Better luck on your next outing!
If you are in the Boise area, my Minelab dealer is there and he knows some good places to check out.

The site that I recently hunted(see my post below) I had several targets that sounded very strong(but not too strong) and they showed either copper or silver. They also showed that they were in the 4-6 inch range. I dug down and found absolutely nothing. I couldnt really go any deeper either. The crazy thing about it was that every other good target That I actually dug up, was right where the depth said it would be.
I hope you have better luck on your next outing!

Well I think you made the right choice to stop digging. Sometimes that is the best road. Good luck with your other hunts in that area, Beale.

Well today was a little better. I went to an old drive in movie theatre that has been open for over 70 years. I talked with the owner and he gave me the go ahead to go search. He told me he has been detecting the drive in for years. I found a couple of silver rosie's and a pocket full of clad. I would have liked to have nailed more silver, but the owner told me he has been hitting it hard for years. It was still a good couple of hours. I paid for my gas and batteries with the clad. I found lots of quarters and dimes. I hope to go out to an old ranch in the next day or two and see what I can find around a couple of 1800's log cabins on the property. As far as the owner knows, they have never been detected.

Good hunting, John K

Where in Idaho were you? HH Dennis in Idaho

Thats a cool place. I lived down the road in Soda Springs,Id, and I hunted the old drive inn there and did very well in the silver dept. Good luck. HH Dennis in Idaho

I have a feeling that the reason you didn't find the target is that the target was at an angle and in the side of the hole. The X70 LOVES targets on an angle. I have learned that when I do not find the target but the X70 still shows it to be there that it is nearly always in the side of the hole. This is where a good pinpointer comes in handy. Just stick it into the hole and go arounf the sides until the pinpointer sounds and dig there. Good hunting!:detecting:

That's a good possibility, I'll have to try that. All of the targets that I couldn't get to had all of the depth arrows lit up. I also centered them in prospecting mode. I know they were way down there. Thanks for the information. I won't have a chance to get back to that park for a while. It was near Preston, ID.
